*The Dynasty's name changed from Stewart to Stuart after Mary Queen of Scots moved to France as a child to ensure that the French were pronouncing the name correctly.

**The Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell, and his son, Richard, of course, were not Stuarts.

***Mary I of England was Mary Tudor (a.k.a. "Bl**dy Mary"),  but Mary I of Scotland was Mary Queen of Scots.  The two countries had different previous Williams as well.

  6. After the death of King James I of England, his second son, Charles I, ruled (his eldest son, Henry Frederick, had predeceased him) from March 1625 until his execution on January 30, 1649, following two Civil Wars (1642-45 and 1648-49). England then became a republic, under Cromwell, until 1660, when the monarchy was restored and Charles II (son of Charles I) became King and reigned until his death in 1685. He was succeeded by his brother, James II / VII (1685-88).
