It was Ptolemy who developed the geocentric theory, where the earth is the center of all planets. Then he was contradicted by Nicolaus Copernicus who enlightened the people by introducing the Heliocentric Theory, which is the sun is the center of the solar system(that's why its called SOLAR system). It was elaborated and expanded by Kepler and defended by Galileo.

The Catholic Church and astrologers in their employ held the arrogant view that the earth was the center of the universe.  If you wanted to be a good catholic, that's what you believed.  Even if you were smart enough to prove otherwise.

Copernicus proved them wrong and spoke out... but the vatican had him arrested and placed under house arrest for the rest of his life for such a heretical view.  

He got off easy, as other astronomers who tried to convince the church that the sun was at the center of our solar system were burned at the stake for the arrogance of believing that god's world was not the center of the universe.  Burn the heretic (no, i'm not joking, i'm dead serious).

Lots of people said that planets orbited the earth - Aristotle, many Greeks etc. Ptolemy was the one who tried to keep that model and make it work for observations of retrograde motion.

As for "proving" him wrong. Copernicus picked up an old idea from other ancient Greeks like Aristarchus and Pythagoras and renewed interest in the sun-centered model. He did not "prove" it at all.

Neither did Galileo, although his observations proved that not everything orbits earth.

"Proof" that Earth orbits the sun came later, and the evidences are:
