Here's a "rumor" (wtf? Why do they even call that a rumor? A rumor has to do with trading right?) from a week ago: http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/rumors/post/Osgood-could-be-the-worst-goalie-to-win-a-second?urn=nhl,83883 I don't agree with that "rumor", but I would like to know if Osgood really is considered to be the worst goalie to ever win a Cup, as that article states. I don't think Osgood is that good of a goalie because of the Wings puck possesion style and how they limit opponents to 18 weak shots per game, but I would not call Osgood the worst goalie to ever win a Cup. However, I can't really think of any sucky goalies to win the Cup either... So then, who is the worst goalie to ever win a Stanley Cup?

  1. My vote goes to Bill Ranford (obtained in 87-88 from Boston because Moog was upset Slats wouldn't play him in the big games) and got the Conn Symthe and a Cup with the 89-90 Oilers

fyi wasn't Pietrangelo dealt to the Whalers along with John Cullen for Grant Jennings and Ron Francis, which along with getting Larry Murphy from the North Stars put the 90-91 Pens over the top?

C'mon lity, that's not fair for Cocoa, with the Oilers' run and gun style he had more breakaways and 2-on-1's against him than many beer league goalies !!

  2. Mike there are a ton of back-up goalies that sucked, yet won the cup.

Andy Aitkenhead was pretty freaking bad for his time.

  3. Bill Ranford.39 games under .500,3.41 GAA for his career.1 All Star Game.

  4. I would pick Chris Osgood the jury is still out on Cam Ward

Billy Randford won the conn smythe during the tail end of the high flying 80's so I wouldn't put too much value in his career stats.

Osgood 98' and 08' wins The Wings cursed through the playoffs and never played a competitive team (trust me in a few years people will realize this Penguins team of 08 wasn't close to winning it all). I'm not saying Osgood doesn't belong in the NHL but he is average goalie just look at what he did with playing with average Blues and Islander teams

Alright when you play close to 70 games 32 wins and 25 losses with average playoff teams and you have 3 1st round exits with a 3-1 blown lead series and 5 game series that is pretty close to average. Again he is not a bad goalie and he's making the stops this playoffs and yes it has been a cake walk but that isn't Osgood's fault.

My argument is would Osgood be the difference with any of the 14 non-playoff teams making the playoffs and some lower seeds not making the playoffs

  5. Didn't the Penguins in the early '90s have some guy named Peitreangelo?  I remember a commercial sighting his play in the playoffs, and the commerical included a part where he was in the dressing room with his top-gear off, and the fat was just hanging off of his arms... and I think the commericial was for a muscle rub, etc.

Basically, he was good enough to allow that exceptional team offense to score more than the opponent, but he wouldn't have won many games if his team did not score 6 per game (for example).

This guys was definitely worse than Osgood.  Ozzie does not face a lot of shots, as you say, but you can't really downplay that he has a Cup and he is playing well this year.  He seems to be making key saves when he needs to and does not look at all "shaky" to me.  Also, Detroit is scoring in front of him, but not like that Pens team of the early '90s.

  6. Look at what he did with the Isles and Blues. Looks at the numbers Greene. He went to a losing Islanders team, and in one year got them 40 more points than the year before. I also believe the one full year he spent with the Blues, he won 32 games. If you want to bash a guy, have a clue. Soory Mike, but I would say Cam Ward, along with Fuhr, he didnt need to stop many, because he always had a 5 goal spot. What about Belfour?? Maybe Khabibulan??

  7. chris osgood is a hall of famer

  8. Patrick Roy.

  9. You asked this just to bait me, didn't you, Mike? lol

I guess I would have to say that I cannot imagine using the word "worst" with any goalie who wins a Stanley Cup -- but I understand you're talking in relative terms here.

I don't know.  Honestly, I don't watch the players in other series (non-Wings) as much as I do the team as a whole, so I feel unqualified.

As to Osgood - as I've said many times, yes - the Wings give up fewer shots and the quality of the shots is often lower than what the Wings themselves take.  BUTT - Osgood is a PART of that team, makes plenty of game-saving saves, instills confidence in his team, and has stats over the years which really make this a silly arguement.  As has been pointed out by others, too, he improved both the NYI and SL teams he played for.  He has given the Wings chances to take leads in games this year because of terrific saves.  In short, the "average" moiniker he gets is wholly not in keeping with the facts.

Maybe if he didn't look 22 years old....?

I will admit that Osgood has benefitted from playing with Hasek in the last few years.  I see differences in him that I think can be atrributed in part to experience (including the valuable experience of NOT being a Wing), and in part to Hasek.  Chock up another genius move for Ken Holland.

Heck, just to see LITY say he has new found respect for Osgood, makes this whole forum worthwhile for me (lol).

  10. I know he's in the Hall of Fame, but Grant Fuhr only won 5 Cups because his team outscored everybody.

h**l, the Oilers would score more goals in 1 game in the 80s than some teams score in a whole series these days.

Grant Fuhr has 3 of the 6 worst Goals against averages for a Stanley Cup winner including the highest ever. (Not surprisingly, Tom Barrasso has 2 of the worst 8 all time).

Of all goaltenders who have multople Cup rings, Fuhr has the highest goals against average (which is fitting because of all goaltenders in the Hall of Fame, Fuhr' has BY FAR the highest career goals against average).

    I'll take Fuhr.

I've gained a lot of respect for Osgood this year (as have many hockey experts) and I'll say he's among the most unheralded goaltenders to win the Cup, but he certainly wasn't the worst.

  11. He is considered to be, but I think hes a hall of famer... he'll get 400 wins, owns the red wings playoff record for wins (passed terry sawchuck), and is like 6th or 7th on the all-time playoff shutouts... and the people above him (cept belfour) are all hall of famers...

so how can you say he is the worst?

if hes the worst, there musta been really darn good goalies winning it.
