  1. Joe's monumental distrust of everyone.... that coupled with guys like Curtis Lemay....

  2. I guess it depends on whose side you take.

We blame russia, but it was a lot of our fault too.

The real issue was this- The marshall plan was designed to help US business get going again and help Europe rebuild (give cash to rebuild factories, homes etc... but materials had to be purchased from US suppliers).  Russia wanted in on it, but we quickly realized, russia wanted like 10 times the amount of cash everyone else needed combined.  Europe as a whole wanted something like 10 billion and it would have cost close to 100 billion to rebuild russia- it was too big and too devastated.  They lost MILLIONS of people in the war and virtually no buildings we left standing.

So when we wrote the marshall plan with the intent of excluding them, they got mad.  We were one of the only countries that didnt suffer devastation from the war.

This led to increased tensions and these slowly escalated to the point of fierce speeches and close distrust and eventually the brink of war.

Another factor was communism.  We didnt like they were communist and they werent willing to change.

  3. Several events fueled suspicion and distrust between the United States and the Soviet Union: the Bolsheviks' challenge to capitalism[6] (through violent overthrow of "capitalist" regimes to be replaced by communism), Russia's withdrawal from World War I in the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with Germany, US intervention in Russia supporting the White Army in the Russian Civil War, and the US refusal to recognize the Soviet Union until 1933.[7] Other events in the interwar period deepened this climate of mutual distrust. The Treaty of Rapallo and the German-Soviet Non-aggression Pact are two notable examples.

  4. There was no such thing as the 'cold war.'

There were disputes among various nations; which was 'nick named' the 'cold war' because the Russians, America and the Germans all had listening posts in the Antarctic; some say they were spy posts, hence the term - 'cold war.'
