  1. I enjoyed seeing Cigar get good, I remember betting on him running at Bay Meadows in a grade 3 race and running 3rd, that the trainer and owners kept running him on turf because he was a palace music (from the minstrel, outstanding lawn breeding from northern dancer) out of a seattle slew mare, then how he transfered to the Mott barn and ran off in two races, an allowance and the NYRA mile (winning by 7 and 8 lengths) then the next year he broke thru in a graded race on the dirt , the Donn at gulfstream...the race that Holy Bull broke down in...it was his fourth win in a row, and that streak would continue around the world, and include a breeders cup classic and a world cup win in Dubai, I followed him around a bit and was there at Del Mar for the Pacific Classic...he was shooting for number 17 but got caught in between a Richard Mandella set up, Mandella had two horses in the race, siphon the speed merchant and Dare and Go the monstrous closer with Alex Solis aboard...opting not to let siphon get too far off on the lead Cigar and Jerry Bailey took chase before the top of the turn, the pace was frantic and by the time they hit the eighth pole Solis had Dare and Go cranked up and ran by Cigar like he was standing still...he ran on bravely for second...the end of the record string, he is still one of only 3 modern racehorses who have won 16 races in a row...Cigar, Citation and a filly who campaigned in Louisiana, Hallowed Dreams... a great story that cigar...one of my other favorite horses was a little known claimer (Jaydunc) that a friend of mine (and Lonnie Arterburn part owned and trained...if his name sounds familiar he is the one who bred Lava Man) bought in Longacres in Renton Wash. and raced at bay meadows and golden gate fields in Albany Ca. (on the east side of the Golden Gate, east of Berkley and Oakland)...they claimed him for 8 dimes and got him to win 5 races in a row, ran two ticks off the course record his first time on the lawn at golden gate for a mile and a sixteenth and got us a few winning tickets and a handful of winner circle pictures , the daily racing form had named him the northern calif claim of the year...not bad for the small investment they had put in...

  2. Barbarbo was my favorite horse he was in the kentucky derby and won and then went on to the prietness and broke its leg as soon as he came out of the gates. The owners tried to fix his leg and everything was fine and then he got a disease so they had to put him down.

  3. my favorite race horse would be scamper the 10 time world champion barrel  racin horse.

  4. rooster booster

  5. Favourite horses of my lifetime, all 26 years of it!  Definitely Dubai Millennium and Haafhd.

Dubai Millennium because watching him race took my breath away.  I worked for Darley in 2001 when D.M went to stud and was lucky enough to see him most days before he died.

Haafhd because I looked after him as a foal, and there was no happier person in Newmarket than me the day he won the 2000 Guineas!

  6. Secreteriat and Seattle Slew without a doubt in my mind. Did hear some really good things about Seabiscut. I doubt if we will ever have another Triple Crown winner. There's too much pressure for the rider and horse to succeed. Plus, there's the risk of injury to one, the other or both (remember Barbaro?). So it will be at least another 2-3 years before we see another Triple Crown.

  7. My own horse Clarinet King because he taught me more about horses and how to know a good one, and also taught me more about myself than any horse born. Next choice would be Cigar hands down one of the most amazing horses to walk the earth both on and off the track.

  8. There are too many for me to pick just one.Seattle Slew,Cigar,John Henry,Smarty Jones,Funny Cide,Barbaro to name a few.

  9. Seabiscut. Cause he showed people that he was little and could still do anything. He inspired me to bull ride even though I'm a girl.

  10. Quis Rush In because I owned her.

  11. the old Chilean champion "cougar2ND" always fired in each race....but did get  beat by Secretariat and Riva ridge, but they were monsters....

  12. John Henry. He's such a grouchy old man, but he showed such grit on the track.

  13. Smarty Jones!

  15. Secretariat!  I got to see him in person too at Claiborne farms and he looked terrific.  His groom took a comb of tail hair and gave it to me.  My wife made a small figure 8 braid of it and it's in the matting of a framed Derby winner's circle picture of him.  I also have the three Triple Crown programs from 1973.  I have an old PBS video called an Easy Way of Going... and a vet who did a study of race horses described Secretariat's gait as the perfect stride.  His Belmont of clocking each quarter mile faster than the previous quarter is by far the best performance ever by a race horse.

    Again, Secretariat!

  16. Thoroughbred--Cigar who I saw race and who nuzzled my hand at Kentucky Horse Park.

    Standardbred--Niatross

  17. I think Secretariat was the greatest race horse. I will always have a place in my heart for Barbaro, though. It is a shame he was just starting his career when he fractured his leg. We'll never know how great he could have been.

  18. I like Barbaro but mostly because of his legacy.

Secretariat is cool, but I'd have to say my all time favorite would have to be Cigar. I got to touch him once!

  19. Secretariat. He still takes my breath away when they show clips of any of his races.

Seeing upclose and personal was an honor I will never forget! I saw him on the track, and in retirement and he still looked great!

  20. Love that Mac

  21. Seattle slew

  22. john henry  though he alittle mean .barbaro.
