Did you watch the movie Riffian on Abc??? If you did what did you think of the movie.

For me the movie was really sad at the end.

Do you think if Ruffian hadn't broken her leg that she would have won the mach race??

Do you think they should have had the mach race??? Thanks.

  1. the movie was amzing but sooooooo sad at the end. it was really sad how she went doing what she loved. if she hadnt broken her leg, she probably couldve beaten foolish pleasure. the part that makes me so mad is that the jockey didnt even slow down to see if ruffian was okay.

    but its worth watching again

  2. I thought you meant the Belmont.  Did you see Rags to Riches , the first filly ever to win the 1 and 1/2 mile Belmont??

And the first Filly to win in 102 years.

It was great, she ran her heart out, after stumbling at the gate.

  3. I watched too and was so sad when they showed her foot bend backward. I thought the movie was great even though I cried at the end.

  4. I did watch it ^^ It was very sad in the end too. Personally I belive she would have won the race. I presonally do not think they should have had a match race because there is no set pace. Like Frank says in the movie the race was going to be  a sprint. But if you read to book (Ruffian: Buring from the Start) they give you some good insight before the race. Like Ruffian's sire had fractured his leg three times in his carrer, which could point to the possibility that Ruffian's bones were genetically prone to breaking. They also state that Ruffian was bigger then Foolish Pleasure in everything but shoe size which ment she was forcing her larger body on small hooves. Some people think that it was all Foolish Pleasure that caused her injury but there is no way in knowing for sure. This match race is the reason no match races are run anymore. The part that upset me in the movie it when Foolsih Pleasure's trainer's father says "First time they threw some speed on her, and the b**** comes unbuckled!" That was sad

Oh and to add on the answer where Foolsih Pleasure's jockey didn't slow down, he actually does. They don't show it in the movie but he slows Foolish Pleasure to a canter. When the race was over he told reporters that he wanted to be Frank but no like that he wasn't it to be a fair race.

  5. I thought the movie was very good, and yes, it was a sad ending. Do I think they should have had that match race? No. It seemed like the hype, hooplah and greed factor overrode the judgement and best intentions of Ruffian's trainer.

  6. I have been a Ruffian fan for many years as I have seen the original race of Ruffian's breakdown plus I have a tape of her best races and her breakdown which is very difficult to rewatch even 32 years later it is heart breaking yet today.

I thought the movie was vey emotional and heart breaking the entire last 1/2 hour of the movie I continued to cry the whole time it is like it was happening all over again, I thought the movie itself was quite well done and Sam Shepherd did a wonderful job as Frank Whitley, I forgot at times it was a movie.

I do not agree which match races as really there is no pace just flat out run to the finish, it is asking to much, horses everyday put theirs lives on the line for our pleasure and they deserve better treatment than to have to run full out for a mile and quarter to prove a bet of creed, Ruffian would have never ran that race if they had not been forced to, and YES she would have won hands down, no questions about it, may she rest in peace, from broken hearted fan 32 years later, the wounds still hurt.

  7. I think she would have won.

  8. It has often been said that Ruffian "died on the lead".

There's no doubt that she would have won.

    The movie was great.....and sad.

But the match race didn't kill her.

Her breakdown just so happened to take place during it.

    It (unfortunetly) was inevitable.
