  1. The Assassins or The Hashshashin (it is popular belief that they used hashish in their rituals and that they got their name from that) were Islamic sect of shia denomination founded by Hasan As-Sabah in 11th century. They were famous for their brutality, religious extremism and their stronghold Alamut at Caspian sea. It is believed that Marco Polo visited Alamut on his travel to the East and that he brought the word to Europe, which from then started to be used as to refer brutal killers.
