Offensive Guard Herb Trawick came to the Alouettes in the same year that Jackie Robinson played for the Montreal Royals. Herb Trawick played 12 years, settled in Montreal, and lived there until he died in 1985. Another black player, John Moody played for the Alouettes as well. 1948 champion Calgary Stampeders had two black players, Woody Strode (who went on to career in movies including "Spartacus") and Chuck "Sugarfoot" Anderson. Later other black players came to Canada including Ullyses Curtis and Billy Bass with the 1950 Argos. Many great players came to Canada to play because the money was good, and the NFL was still quite restrictive. Johnny Bright ('53) with the Eskimos could have played in the NFL. The great decathlete, Milt Campbell came to the Tiger Cats ('57) because he was chased out of the NFL for marrying a white woman. Eddie Macon and Ralph Goldston also came to the Ti-Cats, because NFL opportunities were scarce. Winnipeg acquired Leo Lewis and Ernie Pitts in '57
