Who were the first catchers to wear protective gear?

I'm watching "Eight Men Out" and the catcher is wearing a face mask & chest protector. I didn't think they were used in 1919. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It is not officially proven but supposedly roger bresnahan introduced shin guards in 1907. It is supposedly because of this that he was inducted to the Hall of Fame. Just like the case of Candy Cummings who was inducted based on the fact that he supposedly invented the curveball.
