  1. the chinese were the first to graft plants


  2. Nature itself. People learnt from seeing naturally grafted plants. Alexander "the Great" found a region in Persia where a whole region was "walled" by living trees woven together to make them graft to each other naturally. It was impossible to untangle this and they had to enter that country by covering the trees with earth.

  3. not sure what is meant by "grafting"exactly, but I know that Gregor Mendel was the first to genetically engineer hybrids...used pea plants...back VERY long ago in  a monastary.
