Who were the winners and losers in golf this year?
Golf is a sport in which one cannot definitely pick out winners or losers. Unlike team sports, where a certain team plays in a specific league and tournaments, in golf players play numerous tournaments on different continents.
Therefore, it is just a touch difficult to analyse their performances. However here we take a look at the players who have had the best and worst year.
Rory McIlroy
The world number one started the season slowly but in the later part, he gained momentum. Before the Open Championship, he had only won a single tournament and had missed a few cuts as well.
However, after the Open Championship, Rory McIlroy wore a new look to the golf course.
The 23-year-old won the PGA Championship by a record eight strokes and then, his back to back victories in the FedEx Cup Playoffs really set the tone for him.
Ernie Els
The veteran has had an average season. He did not win on the tour but his victory at the Open Championship makes this season memorable for the well known South African.
There are many players on the tour who have won more tournaments than him but a victory at a major cannot be equalled to a victory on the tour.
Brandt Snedeker
The American has been a revelation this season. The 2007 Rookie of the Year really played some magnificent golf. His performance at the Open Championship and at the Ryder Cup was really amazing.
However, his highlight of the year would be winning the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup. He really dazzled the field at East Lake with his breath taking shots and putts.
Let’s take a look at those players who have not had much success.
Tiger Woods
Without any doubt, the comeback of the year story has been Tiger Woods but his failings at the majors and at the Ryder Cup make him a loser this season.
Tiger Woods won three tournaments this year, winning three events in a year is a big thing but we know Tiger as a major winner. His failings at the majors are a sign of concern.
In every major, he played magnificent golf in the start but then he faded away in the last two rounds.
Then, securing only half a point at the Ryder Cup, out of a possible four, was miserable. The Americans were left devastated in the end.
