Who will bag home the world number one spot in 2013? – Tennis Special
Men’s tennis saw four different professionals winning the separate elite prizes in all the Grand Slam championships and hence claimed the label of the “Big Four”.
The Serbian number one, Novak Djokovic, is lucky to remain on the world number one spot due to Roger Federer’s inability to defend his championship points at Swiss Indoors Basel and the BNP Paribas Masters this year. He then went
to outplay the Swiss Maestro in the final round of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. He started by pocketing away the Australian Open trophy being at the hard courts of Melbourne. He prevailed over the British challenger, Andy Murray in the semi-finals
and later nudged up the win against Rafael Nadal.
The King of Clay, Nadal, dominated the dirt courts of the French Open since the last eight years. The only fortunate man to snatch the win was Federer back in the year 2009. This year, the Spaniard celebrated his triumph after
defeating the Serbian in a tough four setter rain-interrupted final.
However, 26-year-old Nadal was unable to rally forward in the other Grand Slam championships, as his knee was plagued with injury. His absence created a great deal of space for the other contestants, who were desperate to win some
big trophies left in the season. Furthermore, the Spaniard was unable to defend his gold medal in the London Olympics, yet he promises to comeback in 2013.
The 31-year-old Swiss participant, Federer, set the record of being the most notable star of the 2012. He secured the world number one spot after outmuscling Murray in a tough four-set match and became the most powerful champion
on the grass courts.
After that point, he was unable to secure his lead at any of the major championships. He was the silver medallist at the London Olympics. Currently, he rests at the world number two spot and after a straight-sets defeat by the
Serbian at the season-ending grand finale.
The 25-year-old Scot, Murray, is currently the most powerful contender to pocket away major wins in the next season. Initially he started the year at a very sloppy pace and was unable to battle forward to the final rounds of any
Grand Slams.
The Wimbledon Championships proved to an effective icebreaker in his career. Although he lost the Grand Slam final, he avenged his loss from the Swiss professional by winning the gold medal in London Olympics. Furthermore, he proved
his worth by securing a silver medal in the mix doubled category with his compatriot, Laura Robson.
The right-hander, Murray, exhibited his outstanding potential after his triumph at Flushing Meadows. He gave the higher ranked, Djokovic, a shocking defeat after a breath taking five-setter. Nonetheless, the Serbian contender did
not give up and consolidated his win at the Shanghai Rolex Masters.
Next in line is the Argentinean rival, Juan Martin Del Potro, who achieved his astonishing comeback in 2012, when he secured the bronze medal from Djokovic in the Great Games. He surly possesses a superior game plan as he defeated
the Swiss professional, Federer, at the US Open in the year 2009. This year at the Swiss Indoor Basel, he gave the top seeded another three setter defeat. He is well reputed for his monstrous serves, which help him to take over all courts.
Therefore, with a great deal of uncertainly attached with all the players, the world number one spot in the men’s tennis shall remain the biggest mystery of all times!
