LITY, I'd like your feedback too. By the way, it was great meeting you and Bob Gainey in Quebec City and chatting with the two of you, and thanks for getting me Yzerman's autograph..........I didn't realize that you were friends with him or involved in Hockey Canada.

  1. Joe Sakic has already been told he will be Canada's captain in 2010, and if he should retire before then (it would be his 21st NHL season), Jarome Iginla will take over the role.

Daniel Alfredsson will be Sweden's captain in 2010.

Most other countries have not made a decision yet, nor do any of these countries have clear cut favourites.

The probability of your scenario is none.  If he retires, there are rumours that he would join the staff of the team in some capacity, but I have not heard which capacity that would be.

It was nice meeting you as well, as well as the woman who claimed she is on here too.  By the way, I don't work for Hockey Canada, as part of my role with the NHL, I provide information to several National Federations from the NHL's scouting reports.

  2. In response to some out here... I find it hard to believe that either Rick Nash or Dany Heatley would be better captains than Burnaby Joe or Jarome Iginla. They are both young and prolific goal scorers, (not to take away from them,) but neither has proven to be an established leader at the level they play. Sakic has already captained a team to a cup, and Iginla has already steered the Flames to a cup final. (I can't remember the Blue Jackets EVER making the playoffs, and Heatley wasn't exactly a team leader (besides his stats) when Ottawa had their run last year. Bottom line... neither is ready to be a captain of an olympic team, yet. Four more years, and I wouldn't be surprised, especially if either of them become successful with their given teams.

  3. Given the location of the games, I cannot see Canada not offering Joe Sakic the captaincy assuming he's still playing.  A second choice would be Jarome Iginla (Western Canadian).  Both are club captains.

For the American team...they never seem to do that which makes sense.  I would guess Modano would have to be part of the discussion, but beyond that I've no clue.

I'm guessing the Swedes go with Alfredsson as their captain; I just don't see Sundin as a viable option.

The other big name teams I'm just not sure about.

  4. LITY - What is the likelihood that he would retire from the NHL but still play for the Olympic team?  I realize that he'd be missing a lot of game experience prior to the games, but he'd sure be rested!

  5. Now THAT will all depend on who actually decides to play and who actually makes the team. ie: will Sakic last until then? Would Nash be a good choice. It's all conjecture at this point as far as the Canadian and other teams go.

  6. Rick Nash.  He should be rewarded with his outstanding play for Team Canada over the past few years.  Provided he does not get injured, I think Nash would be a good choice for team Canada.

  7. nasher as captain over dany heatley????

i'm glad saks is going to be our captain. he's a great leader, and all the team canada players respect him and like playing with him.

alfie got swedish captain? not surprised.

does that mean saku's going to get the fins captaincy/ will it be teemu?

i hope ryan smyth, and all the youngsters make team canada. 2010 is going to be awesome.

  8. I am pretty sure Shane Doan or Rick Nash. Doan has been captain and probably will take it but I have heard buzz about Nash taking it.
