Sabiathia and Sheets are in contract years. Can the Brewers afford to keep both? Can they keep either?

  1. Well there are a few factors that are wrong about the previous people's statements.  Im a cardinals fan, but i keep up a lot with the central division.  Sabathia and Sheets will almost definitely both be gone.  If they do not sign either, the brew crew will have 5 of the first 35 picks int he upcoming draft.  That is unheard of, and they would be stupid not to pounce on those picks and give up sabathia and sheets who will both demand a boatload of money and 4-6 year deals.  Parra and Yovani Guallardo will defiitely fill the gap, they are young, very impressive arms that will take the place of sheets and CC.  The ace will be Guallardo with Parra being a close second

  2. Gallardo will be, there is no way the Brewers sign both Sabathia and Sheets and I don't think they'll keep either of them.

  3. Gallardo will be

Sabathia or Sheets will go to the Yankees.

They may be able to keep one, but certainly not both.

  4. I don't think they will keep either.  Sheets already said he wants to test the free agent market and the brewers don't want to give him a five year deal and Sabathia will cost too much money. I think Gallardo will be the ace and if he cant rebound from his injury it'll be Parra

  5. Sheets because he wont just get taken over by sabathia coming

  6. Manny Parra.

It will be unlikely that the Brewers will keep either Sheets or Sabathia.  The Brewers could likely pay a fair market value for Sheets but in free agency it only takes one team to make a premium offer to blow everyone away.  And I think that will likely happen.

That leaves Parra as the best pitcher that will have completed a full major league season.

  7. Yovanni Gallardo - he tore his ACL this year but he always pitches lights out and is very good.  After him there will be manny parra.  Villaneuva will probably be in the rotation too.  they cant keep either sabathia or sheets because fielder and hart both hit arbitration for the first time. Hart will get about 8 million this year because he made the all star team and prince will get his 10 million so they don't really have a chance to keep either

  8. I suspect that both Sheets and Sabathia will not be in a Brewers uniform come next season. If he is healthy enough, Gallardo would take the helm.

  9. With Gagne, Cameron, and one of those two going, the brewers will have over $25 million to re-sign one of them. If it were up to me, I'd take Sabathia. No disrespect to Sheets or anything, but Sabathia seems to be having a good time here, through pitching/hitting/fan respect, and we actually have the money to keep him.

Quick EDIT: Fielder will probably get 5-7 million in arbi, but Attonasio seems to have money coming out of the woodworks somehow, so I'm confident one of those two will stay.

Edit2: Jack Z would have a heart attack if he gets to pick 5 in the top 35 two years in a row(Remember Cordero and Linebrink?). I'm sure he'll be content with three. I'm not sure where Ray Durham stacks up but he might bring in another compensation pick, but not two. I think he's a Type B free agent.

  10. If Brewers' Management can figure out a way to keep both Sheets & Sabathia, then I think that CC will get the nod.

I believe that the Brewers will be able to hang on to at least one of these guys, so if they lose Sabathia then Sheets will be their Ace in 2009

Sheets just recently turned 30 and Sabathia is only 28, so they're both just hitting their best years.

    Sabathia

    2007 - ERA= 3.21   WHIP= 1.14  (Cy Young winner)

    2008 - ERA= 3.51   WHIP= 1.18

    Sheets

    2007 - ERA= 3.82   WHIP= 1.24

    2008 - ERA= 2.88   WHIP= 1.15

How can the Brewers afford to keep them both?

Good news... losing Gagne will free up about $10million.

...could also exercise a club buyout option on Mike Cameron to free up another 9+million.... of course there will be some holes to fill too.

Bad news... Weeks, Hardy, Hart & Fielder all become arbitration eligible in 2009.

Who wants to take one for the team?

  11. They're going to be in trouble as far as their starting rotation in 2009. Maybe Manny Parra or Gallardo? I don't know. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to pick up a starting pitcher in the off season from a trade or free agents.

I find it funny that some people are comparing Sheets and Sabathia when neither of them will be on the Brewers next year.
