Question:

Who will be the first woman AFL coach?

The season's nearly over, as are the lives of several AFL coaches. In this modern era, what with woman administrators, woman umpires, water girls, masseuses, surely it's only a matter of time when an AFL club appoints a woman as coach. Surely they can bring something new to the game?

  1. To WBFC 2008 you do not have to have played VFL/AFL to coach and woman may not be coaching any time soon but they could be asst. coaches.

  2. Noone - i dont think that women should coach AFL, i dont really have a reason why - just think that it would be stupid...Some things should just be left to men.

  3. Being a woman myself, not trying to be sexist or anything but.....

I don't think there will ever be one!! , imagine the guys taking orders from someone that has never actually played AFL?

I know women can do a lot of things but lets leave it to the guys :)))

I think it's nice that guys and girls are different and can do different things, makes life interesting. :)))

  4. Rebecca Wilson she thinks she knows it all.

  5. I know some of the women in this section think they know everything about the AFL but it will never happen, They just think they know the game but reality is they should go watch netball.

  6. i will have to agree with the bulldogs guy nick reiwolt has it in the bag

  7. Me :) No just joking, I don't think it will ever happen in AFL. It's great to see women involved in the administrative, and club side of the game, but I just think that the actual game is a man's domain, and it should be left that way.

  8. It would be amazing and really outline the fact that women are widely associated within afl and arent just there to give the players water or massage them if they are in pain - lol i would love to be an afl coach ahah it would be such a wild ride!

I dont know if its ever going to happen - but i say if a woman ever wishes to do so - good luck!

  9. Good for you Laurie, your brains are where they oughta be, unlike a few of the respondents to your question.

A woman could be fit enough, intelligent enough, knowledgeable enough to be a senior AFL coach. She could come to it from fitness coaching, therapy or sports medicine - all of which need these qualities.

However, I have some doubts that she would be able to either inspire or teach the sort of heavy contact skills that are becoming commoner in today's game. Most women are averse to crunching collisions by nature! Mind you, there are a few BLOKES who would not be capable of that too.Sam Newman suggested on the Footy Show that his days of ruck coaching are over.

As you say above, women take part in almost all aspects of coaching now, it is possible one may become head honcho at a major club, but I would prefer to put my money on Geelong winning the 2009 flag.

  10. Not in my lifetime, what a huge risk1 all current AFL coaches have played at a very high level, (Craig in the SANFL) Granted you don't have to have played at the elite level but I think not playing the game at any level would be a a major deterrent in appointing a coach, sorry ladies!!

  11. the day we elect a female prime minister. then footy clubs will realise that if the country can be run by a woman, then their clubs can too.

this in no way was meant to be sexist. i mean i think it'd be great to see a female coach

  12. me!!!lol nah no way..idk if there will be one cos the females such as the ones on those talk shows are the dumbest things that have walked on earth ..no offence or anything..i recon a woman can do it and id love to see it lol but not right now

  13. i know who will be the first woman coach and it will be scott mclaren (the umpire) and i hope she doesnt coach geelong coz i hate her guts.

  14. I was trying to think of something smart to say but can't top Molly's answer. She beat me to it.

So, as an answer to your question, it has to be Rebecca Wilson.

  15. i will

    nahhh i wish

i gues u really have 2 have been a player to be a coach, and i guess it wood be kinda weird for the players to have a woman coach

i dnt relaly think it will ever happen, well not for a verrryyy veryyy veryy long while anyway.

    so i guess i wil just ahve 2 b a woman commentator instead :) (ha, i wish)

  16. Not really likely - you might get a female fitness coach but that would be about it. The Dockers tried a few years ago to integrate Ric Charlesworth (Hockey supercoach) into their coaching lineup and that didn't work so well so I would think a female would have about the same impact. I really think that you need to have played the game at a high level to really get a grasp on it. (although Geelong might get away with it for a couple more seasons coz i thnk Mark Thompson is getting paid a truck load to eat sandwiches in the coaches box at the moment...)

  17. You Had To Have Played AFL To Be A Coach.

Nick Rewold Mite Be First Woman Coach lol

  18. the problem with that is they have never played AFL so it wouldnt work. Sure it would be great but there needs to be an in depth knowledge that can only come from playing the game. besides, if a woman was appointed we wouldnt know the name because it wont be for another 50 years.
