Over the last year and a half, Justin Langer, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Stephen Fleming, Sanath Jayasuriya (in ODI's),Shaun Pollock, Brian Lara, Inzamam Ul-Haq and Damien Martyn etc have retired from international cricket after long and successful careers.

My question is which successful big name player will be the next to retire ? and when will they retire ?. Will it be

*Hayden, Kumble, Laxman, Dravid, Mohammed Yousuf, Ganguly or even Tendulkar or Muralitharan (unlikely) !!

  1. I think Hayden will stay till after the ashes series and laxman has few years left if he wants

Ive got a different one for you:

I think Habibal Bashar must be thinking about chucking it in hes now 35 and has been dropped from both teams and his form has seen a serious drop in recent years

  2. I think it's more likely to be one of the Indian players to be honest. Some of the younger players in the Indian team are having a bit of success so I think the administration will be looking less towards the seasoned players to get the results (as they have done in the past), and I think a few of them will be forced to retire. My money is on Laxman or Ganguly to be the next two to go. Tendulkar will stay until he wears himself out lol (which if you take into account his recent injuries that might not be too long away).

I think Hayden will play on until after next years Ashes and possibly longer, he still has the game after all. Murali will be around until he gets a record that won't be broken for decades (over a 1000 wickets). I think Murali is driven by a desire to prove his critics wrong and until he thinks he's done that he'll be around for a while.

On a side note; has anyone run the spell check over a group of cricketers names, some of the suggestions are hilarious!

  3. I think Michael Vaughan is one knee jerk away from the bus pass, and possibly Jacques Kallis, who is only 32, but to me  does not look as hungry as he was and a bit fed up.

  4. Jacques Kallis, Mohammed Yousuf.

  5. the next big name is jumbo the anil kumble from tests which will happen in less than  a year.

And in the list u gave,Hayden will be the one who will be retiring first b4 all of the others.Sachin will play 2011 world cup if he avoids controversies and so will others.

  6. Kumble and Hayden...

    Maybe Dravid...

  7. anil kumble or rahul dravid.

  8. i think it should be tendulkar

  9. kumble

  10. vaughan

  11. My moneys on Dravid or Ganguly

  12. Not Hayden, i think he is still hungry enough to go on.

Murali will still be playing when he is a pensioner

    Maybe Dravid or Ganguly

  13. I think Kumble and Murlitharan.

  14. I think Tendulkar, i'm not sure about Hayden, there's been no talk of it.

  15. Hayden has plundered many attacks but his feet are becoming slow. That does not come back. Ricky Ponting's back ailment will soon force him out of the game.

  16. Michael Vaughan could be the next big name (sorry KooKee!). I know he is trying to hang on and retire after the 2009 Ashes, but he is struggling to hold down a place in the side, and is under pressure for his place in the top six from Shah, Bopara, Flintoff and now Rob Key seems to be back in favour again (not before time).

Of the others, Hayden will not retire until after 2009, and I can see him going on until he is 40. Kumble may retire if the Indian selectors decide that they no longer wish to split the captaincy, and give it to Dhoni full time. Laxman has always had question marks over his place (why???) but is no where near to retiring. Dravid has a big 12 months ahead: he may be forced into retirement by being dropped. Mohammed Yousuf is far from retiring. Ganguly has just successfully rehabilitated his place in the side, so he won't retire. Muralitharan is driven by statistics, and will endeavour to keep going until he reaches 1,000 Test victims. Tendulkar may be forced to retire through injury.

I predict the next three to retire will be: Vaughan, Kumble and Tendulkar.

  17. I don't think it will be Hayden. Tendulkar has also made it clear that he wants to play in the 2011 world cup.

My bet would be on Kumble, probably after the india australia series in september.

  18. Sourav Ganguly,Rahul Dravid or Sanath Jayasuriya(**hes retired from tests not odis:|)

    Tim Ambrose...

  19. Ganguly, Laxman and Dravid will (and probably should retire) from ODI cricket if they do not make the India squad for the Champions Trophy, later this year (Sep-Oct). They will then concentrate on Tests and leading their city teams in the IPL.

And I do not know why some people are suggesting Kallis, he is only 32 and in good shape. Even if he doesn't bowl as much, or lost pace, he is one of the top batsmen in the world and could carry on in that capacity for the next five years at least.

Tendulkar will retire after 2011 World Cup (held in the subcontinent), probably Murali will do as well.

Mohammed Yousuf has at least 5 years left in him, because he's getting better with age and his primary responsiblity is batting long innings, not bowling or fielding in the outfield.

  20. I think Ganguly, Dravid, Kumble, Vaughan, Kallis, Sachin Tendukar and Muralitharan should be retired now.

Because their performance are not upto the mark as they were to be known, specially Kumble must must retire, b/c lots of youngsters are awaited to be a part of their team and these guys are not serious to announce retirements to place the vacant position in the team for youngsters. Once specially Sachin and Kumble. They played lot of cricket and its time to take action by their boards. If they still played, i think all these cricketers specially Sachin and Kumble will become infamous
