Who will emerge as the top team in Pool D of 2012 CEV Women’s Champions League?
The Preliminary round of 2012 CEV Women’s Champions League is supposed to complete its run on Tuesday, January 17.
A total of 20 women’s teams from different parts of the European continent entered the competition and staged some action-packed thrillers on the volleyball court. Out of 12, only 12 teams will advance to the next round of the tournament. Two top teams from
each pool will be promoted, while two teams from remaining 10 participants will be awarded seats in the Playoffs 12 due to their better ratio.
In Pool D, there is tough competition going on between Vakifbank TTelekom ISTANBUL of Turkey and Azerbaijan’s Azerrail Baku for the top slot. Turkish team is currently ranked number 2 in the group with an overall record of 4-1 and 11 points, while Baku is
on top with 13 points and a 4-2 record.
Both teams are scheduled to play their last matches of the league round on Tuesday against different competitors. Vakifbank is set to take on Italian Volleyball Bergamo, whereas Azerrail Baku will put up against Romania’s 2004 Tomis CONSTANTA.
Vakifbank TTelekom ISTANBUL has better chances to end up the league round in top position. They have already score four wins and if they add another victory to their tally, no other team in Pool D will be able to match its record with the Turks. The team
has performed amazingly well in the last two matches and it is totally up for another home victory against Italian counterparts. Looking at the previous statistics, it is easy to judge that Turkish team has better probability to score victory against Bergamo.
On the other hand, Azerbaijani squad is also eyeing the top slot in the ranking. However, they will have to make sure that they win the next match against Romanian 2004 Tomis CONSTANTA. Moreover, they will only go on the top if Vakifbank of Turkey would
drop the decision in its respective match.
If Azerbaijan wins the next match, it will only bring it on the current level of Vakifbank TTelekom Istanbul. Previously, Azerrail Baku appeared in six matches and suffered the loss in two fixtures. Hence, the victory against Romania will improve their record
to 4-2.
Azerrail Baku will also play at home, while 2004 Tomis CONSTANTA will be featured as the guest team. Azerbaijani team is all up to grab success against visiting Romanian ladies.
“Even though we were assigned to a group of death we already took our spot for the 1/8 finals halfway through the League Round. We still want to finish first of course but our main aim remains to qualify for the final four,” said Baku’s head coach f**g Garayev.
Turkish Vakifbank has better chances to finish as the top team in Pool D of 2012 CEV Champions League Prelims.
