  1. the way tarver fought against clinton woods i would put a million quid on calzaghe defeating tarver probebly even  stopping him

  2. one word CALZAGHE

  3. Joe Calzaghie, of course - bet you a pint !

  4. Most all the folks on the board gave me c**p when I said that if Calzaghe squared his shoulders, he would hit the canvas. I also said that Calzaghes punch rate would be cut in half when he fought Bernard. I was right on both counts.

Via that logic, if I would pick the last person on the earth that Calzaghe would fight, it would likely be Tarver.

Not that Tarver is that good, in fact I think the opposite of him. It took someone so simple and basic to unravel the mystery that was Roy Jones. Because he beat him with basic skills, not alot of flash or things that Roy was used to dealing with.

One, I agree with Tarver being able to counter Joe better than Hopkins, but more importantly he would be a bit too big and would step out of Joes range too much. Unlike Hopkins, Tarver has a very respectable long jab that would be able to establish distance in the ring.

Also, Tarver just like Calzaghe, is a very awkward fighter. He has long arms and kees his guard very high. He also can hit considerably harder, albeit not consistently, than most of the opponents Joe has faced in the past. Basically, his countering would do MUCH more damage.

Not that Joe couldnt win that, he probably would. But he would likely take too much in the process.

  5. I to reckon Tarver would be a big headache for Calzaghe,id put money on Tarver to win possibly by inside the distance ko.

  6. Who cares, the fight would be like watching paint dry ................ and lets face it Calzaghe would get the decision even if he got put down every round !!

  7. I think Tarver would give Calzaghe a lot of problems with his height and overall size.  Hopkins caught Tarver at a very low point, but he also fought him just right.  He was very patient, and didn't try to be too aggressive.  Tarver is a natural counter-puncher so if you come at him and throw a lot of punches you're right where he wants you to be.

Calzaghe would have to outwork him, but I thought he'd really outwork Hopkins, but when you're in with world class fighters you can't just throw a punch of silly punches and combinations like Calzaghe likes to do.

Tarver may have a lot fewer fights, but he's basically been up against only top level light heavyweights his whole career; Harmon, Woods, Johnson, RJ, Griffin, Harding - I think Joe would be in over his head, and won't be able to show Tarver anything he hasn't seen.

Tarver has a size and power advantage, and certainly won't be afraid of Calzaghe's power - unless he disappears in another big fight, I'd bet on Tarver to take a decision, or late round stoppage if he moves forward countering.

To the guy who took a shot at RJ, please remember that Roy beat Tarver in their first fight.  And the only mystery Tarver solved was what happens when fighters make leaps in weight then come back down (one I guess he didn't remember before he took the fight with Hopkins).
