Who will win the 2012 Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship?
Fernando Alonso of Ferrari had been deemed as the most favourite driver in the 2012 Formula 1 season but after his retirement in the Japanese Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing took his place and has been considered as the strongest contender
in the title chase.
Alonso has led the drivers’ championship for quite long in the current season and has impressed everyone with his incredible performances. Even though, the Scarlet team struggled throughout their pre-season testing programme this year and failed to develop
a competitive car as compared to the other rivals. Nonetheless, the two-time world champion has performed tremendously well even with the incompetent car and has proved his potential.
It will be important to mention that after the Singapore GP, Jenson Button of McLaren said that only the defending champion can catch up the 31-year-old in the forthcoming races and insisted that the championship battle will be fought between these two drivers.
“It's hard for anyone [to catch Alonso] except Seb at the moment,” Button was quoted by BBC Sport. “It's between those two but there's still a lot of people with a long shot. That's what we're all going to go for.”
“It just shows one bad race makes a massive difference,” he added. “Fernando had his in Spa, Lewis had his in Spa and here, Seb had his at the last race. I had mine in the last race. When no-one has the consistency you can't close a big gap on someone. Seb
is only 29 points behind, that's a gap that's shrinking.”
Therefore, it can be assessed that veteran German driver and the Spaniard are undoubtedly the strongest title contenders.
However, it is to be noted that the current season has brought many surprises until now and nothing can be predicted about the remaining races as the competition is very tough. Thus, any driver who is standing amongst the top three to four places can win
this year’ championship.
It will be extremely thrilling to see how all the drivers perform in the remainder of the season and who claims the championship title in the end.
