Bob Black Jack broke the world mark at Santa Anita for 3/4 mile.. Colonel John and Pyro.. should get the exacta..box all ways!!

With most of the Derby preps finished, it's looking like Pyro's race to lose.  It's hard to choose without knowing post positions.  But Pyro has shown he can have a pretty rough trip but come out as the best of a talented group of horses.  I particularly like his run in the Risen Star when he ran the last quarter of a mile of that race in about 22 seconds flat.  It seems that this horse gets better as the races get longer!

Colonel John was quite impressive last week and has a good shot.

For a longshot, consider Tomcito if he has enough earnings to get in.  The only thing I don't like about this horse is that he's untested against the best of the US horses and hasn't had enough starts in his 3 year old year.  But there's one thing we know about this horse that we don't know about any others: he certainly has the mile and a quarter... no other horse in the field has raced over the distance before.  Tomcito has wins at a mile and a quarter and at a mile and a half!

Ask this question again after we have post positions and I'll be able to answer better.
