Call me crazy, but I have a gut feeling Marat Safin will have a strong showing at the US Open, and take the championship. Marat's specialty is hard/cosmopolitan court of the US and Australian Open, and he has been looking strong lately. His biggest competition is probably Novak Djokovic.

As for the ladies, look out for Lindsay Davenport to come out with a great US Open homecoming performance and take the championship. Her biggest competition is probably Venus Williams, who is on a big roll momentum wise, after winning Wimbledon.

Novak Djokovic really show us a great match in Hard Court this year ( Australian open ) which is where he beat Federer in the semi's and Tsonga in the final :)

Women's - The William

I bet one of the William sister , especially Serena, she's good in Hard Court .. last year hard court champs ( Australian Open ) ..

Oh, Maria Sharapova too, she's the winner of this year first hard court grand slam :)

The womens tour is just so open at the moment so its hard to make a prediction as their is no clear favourite or number 1 players since the retirement of Justine Henin. Maria Sharapova has the game and the pedigree on the hard courts so I would make her a favourite along with Serena Williams. Outsiders I think will be Ivanovic and if fit Davenport. Also Kuznetsova I think has a real chance if she can get it together for a whole tournament.

I think Jelena Jankovic and Venus Williams will disappoint.

For the men I make Federer and Djokovic the favourites. The mens is far less open and there is only 3-5 players actually capable of winning a grand slam at the moment.

Despite Rafa having an unbelievable year, I consider him an outsider but nevertheless still a genuine contender though my strongest memory of him on hard courts was the Tsonga match which I know is unfair. I am really interested to see how he does in the warm up events. Also it is still not clear as to the extent of his knee injury and on the hard courts any leg injury is not at all forgiving.

I think if Murray has a good build up to it and can get himself a top 8 seed I think he have his most successful Grand Slam to date though I wouldn't have him down as a leading contender-I have him down as the 4th favourite.

Then of course there is Nalbandien-Out of form and injured and Andy Roddick-Becoming one-dimensional.

Also there is Daveydenko-I don't give him a hope of winning though I think semis is not out of the question for him.

Its such a shame Safin is unlikely to be seeded. I he was I would have made him an outsider-He is still top 4 quality-ON HIS DAY.

Anyway all that said I think the winners will be :

For men is pretty obvious, Federer & Djokovic is the top two favourite.  I'll put Nadal as third favourite due to his best result in the U.S. Open is only quarterfinal even he's conquering the French and Wimbledon this year but he's improving on hard court though.

For women is pretty wide open.  Williams sisters, both Serbians, Sharapova, Other Top Russian Players such as Dementieva, Kuznetsova all have their chance.  Some young rising stars such as Azarenka, Szavy, Radwanska, Vaidisova might cause some upsets.  So it's pretty much anybodies game.

I am a very big Nadal fan, but I think Federer or Djokovic have a better chance of doing well at the US Open than Nadal.

Women: Ana Ivanovic. She still was not over from the French Open high and lost meekly at Wimbledon. She will do much better at the US Open.
