  1. Leon was a outstanding amateur but wanted to party when he turned pro and is only remembered for upsetting a past his prime Ali in 1978 when it was only Spinks 8th fight. Cooney had a decent career and fought some decent fighters and won before being derailed by Holmes, then Leon's brother Michael, and finally an older Foreman. Leon is the more of the better boxer but lacked punching power and his chin did last too well with a decent hit if it connected. Cooney was not well either but he did last longer against Larry Holmes then Spinks did. Plus Cooney hit harder then Holmes. Cooney by TKO in 6.

  2. The one that is still alive..?

  3. This is an easy fight for Gerry.  Leon would come right at him.  Its all he ever knew.  Spinks would jump in Cooney's chest and appear to have some marginal success.  Its an allusion.

Cooney would push Spinks back to gain some leverage.  Slightly off balance, Spinks would get caught with a cranking left hook, first to the body, then to the head.

Cooney would be no good against many of today's gargantuian heavyweights.  However,  smaller men often played into his hands.  A young Tyson would speed past him, survive any attempt to tie him up,  and KO Gerry in 3.

Spinks lacks the power and endurance to even come close.

    Cooney by KO in 2

  4. Cooney by knockout in 7 rounds

  5. my trainer Ken at the 12th and Park Recreational Center trained spinks. So spinks

  6. If he was in good shape, Cooney would have kayoed Spinks in short order.

Leon was in the right place at the right time, and for a very short time.  He could not compete with serious heavyweights of his era.

  7. Before Cooney lost to Larry Holmes his previous 3 fights were a TKO 4 of Jimmy Young, a KO 1 of Ron Lyle and a TKO 1 of Ken Norton. Although all were slightly past their prime it wasn't by that much. Cooney was a murderous body puncher and his destruction of Ken Norton was one of the most comprehensive I've seen.

Spinks would charge straight out at Cooney only to be met with a rib cracking left hook to the body.  Cooney would follow up with another 3 left hooks to the same place and Spinks would fold to the canvas for the count.

Cooney wins by KO in round 1.

  8. George Clooney isn't a boxer, don't be silly... :-D

  9. In their primes, at their best, Cooney wins easily, probably by KO with that devastating left hook.  Cooney was bigger & stronger  and punched harder.

But that assumes Cooney comes in with the right attitude & determination.  His problem was heart - he blew away his career like a big cry baby when he lost to Holmes.  He put up a good fight & it was no disgrace to lose to Holmes, the best of his era and I think a very underrated champ who belongs in the all time top ten heavyweights.  But Cooney took the money & ran - partied away his career.

  10. cooney is bigger & more powerful, spinks has the faster hands and probably more heart!

    cooney wins in 5 rounds.
