  1. 1968 Forward Pass I. Valenzuela 2:01 4/5

  2. Forward Pass -

    Jockey: Ismael Valenzuela

    Owner: Calumet Farm

      Breeder: Calumet Farm

    Trainer: Henry Forrest

  3. The horse was Forward Pass, only horse to win after disqualification. Original Winner was Dancer's Image!!!!

  4. Dancer's Image won the race, but Forward Pass was awarded the victory when Dancer's Image's post-race urine sample came back positive for the drug butazolidin, which at that time was a forbidden substance.

Now, of course, you'd be hard-pressed to find a racehorse that doesn't run with Bute and/or Salix (used to be called Lasix).  But at the time, Bute was illegal.

Peter Fuller, owner of Dancer's Image, fought the disqualification in court.  It took years, literally, to settle the case.

Dancer's Image remains the only horse ever to have been disqualified from the winner's spot in the Derby.  Even the battling finish of Broker's Tip and Head Play in 1931 didn't result in a DQ.  (Gate Dancer was disqualified from 4th place to 5th place in 1984 after interference in the stretch and is the Derby's only other DQ.)  http://www.kentuckyderby.com/2006/derby_...

  5. Dancer's Image, who was DQ'd for a drug violation, which made Forward Pass - the second place finisher - the champion. The DQ was actually tied up in court for years, as Image's owner attempted to get the win reinstated.

  6. *In 1968, Dancer's Image finished first, but was disqualified after a post-race urine sample revealed traces of a banned drug in the horse. The drug in question - phenylbutazone - is now legal for use on racehorses in many states, including Kentucky. At the Kentucky Derby official website [1] and on the winner's plaque at Churchill Downs, both Dancer's Image and Forward Pass are listed as the 1968 winner of the Kentucky Derby.

  7. The winner of the 1968 kentucky derby was Forward Pass, the first horse to win as a result of disqualification! Traces of phenylbutazone was found in the first place winner's urinalysis, and as a result Forward pass was the winner. 2nd place was occupied by Francie's Hat and 3rd place by T.V Commercial.
