  1. It was Butch James

  2. the south african number ten jersey was worn by Butch (look ma no arms)James

  3. Butch James

  4. Big Bad Bustling Butch James

  5. Butch James, who is made to look much better than he really is by the genius that is Fourie Du Preez.

Anyway, in Rugby Union the number 10 means the starting fly half. So if say Andre Pretorius starts at fly half he would wear number 10.

Here is a rundown of the positional numbers.

1 = Loosehead Prop eg' Andrew Sheridan, Os Du Rand.

2 = Hooker eg' John Smit, Raphael Ibanez

3 = Tighthead Prop eg' Phil Vickery, CJ Van Der Linde

4 = Second Row eg' Simon Shaw, Bakkies Botha

5 = Second Row eg' Victor Matfield, Ben Kay

6 = Blindside Flanker eg' Schalk Burger, Nili Latu

7 = Openside Flanker eg' Juan Smith, Richie McCaw

8 = Number 8 eg' Danie Roussow, Nick Easter

9 = Scrum Half eg' Fourie Du Preez, George Gregan

10 = Fly Half eg' Dan Carter, Johnny Wilkinson

11 = Left Wing eg' Bryan Habana, Chris Patterson

12 = Inside Centre eg' Stirling Mortlock, Felipe Contepomi

13 = Outside Centre eg' Francois Steyn, Matthew Tait

14 = Right Wing eg' Joe Rockoko, Paul Sackey

15 = Full Back eg' Percy Montgomery, Ignacio Corletto

    Hope this helps.

  6. His name is Butch James, below are some details about him.

    Playing Position: Flyhalf

James made his long-awaited return to Test rugby against New Zealand in Wellington this year – his first Bok cap since Twickenham, 2002.

However, the Sharks flyhalf finished the Vodacom Tri-Nations on the bench, as a fit-again André Pretorius regained the No 10 jersey.

James has had two major operations, one on each knee (each operation required a minimum of six months out of the game), but returned to the Sharks’ Vodacom Super 14 squad for their final two matches against the Bulls and Force this year.

James was on the verge of being named in Jake White’s first squad of 2004, and one of the favourites to wear the No 10 jersey, when he tore knee ligaments against the Stormers.

Like provincial halfback colleague Craig Davidson, James fought off considerable competition in 2000 to establish himself as the Sharks’ first choice flyhalf.

The No 10 jersey was shared between Gaffie du Toit and Clinton van Rensburg during the Vodacom Super 12, but the consistency and temperament of the precocious former Maritzburg College boy saw him win through by the middle of the Bankfin Currie Cup competition.

He was in inspirational form for the Sharks in the 2001 Super 12 campaign and has played an influential role in their march to the top of the table midway through the competition.

His deft touch and accurate boot compliments his strong running nicely, although he still needs to iron out some defensive flaws. He has caught the attention of national coach Harry Viljoen and was rewarded with a place in the national training squad.

His talent has long been recognised in Durban. Although he did not play Craven Week rugby, he made his senior provincial debut for the Sharks as a replacement while still a teenager.

He was a member of the SANZAR/UAR Under-21 championship winning side in Argentina where he contested the flyhalf position with then Sharks teammate Jaco van der Westhuyzen. The latter might have been the first choice in Argentina, but this was not the case back in Natal, where he was allowed to leave for the Pumas and it was James who was offered a contract.

James has fought his way back from several injuries to become the Boks’ first-choice flyhalf. He started four of the side’s opening five Tests in 2007, scoring an interception try against the All Blacks in Durban.

The 27-year-old also played a vital role for the Sharks in the 2007 Vodacom Super 14, helping them top the log. James produced arguably his best performance in a Bok jersey during the first Test against England last November, but injured his knee and missed the second.

  7. Seems like most of the time, it was Butch James, but Andre Pretorius was in the Tonga game.

By the way, I believe that, in Rugby, the number designates what position you are playing. One person doesn't get to keep a number all the time unless you always play that position.
