In America you are talking about the Director's Guild, which will only consider applicants with a degree in film, media etc. With positions under that a degree is extremely helpful, but not necessary to enter the industry. You must realize that film and television are part of the entertainment industry. In other words, while earning a degree, you can make a living in the industry, giving you valuable experience and connections.
