Who would board here...?

Would anyone board their horse at a place where the building was an old cow barn that was renovated for horses? I'm thinking about boarding at a place like this and I really don't see the difference as any other place.

  1. It seems like a good place. As long as there are no safety hazards or weird catches to the renovation, it sounds like a good alternative.

  2. as long as it looks safe and there are good reviews about it, then it should be ok

we keep our horses on our property, but our barn used to be an old chicken house and we put 3 stalls and a small turn out area in it, we also keep hay and feed in there..it works fine

  3. I don't like the idea of it, cow barns are built weird. there is the flooring were your horse would stand on and then there is 8 feet between that and the  ground. If the floor is not reinforced then your horse could fall threw. I don't trust it just because i know i horse that fell threw once of those, the horse is ok because it landed on a support beam, but 2 feet over it would have dropped 9 feet. some can be safe but i just would not take the chance.

  4. Possibly. I would have to see it or pics & how much.

  5. I rented a cattle barn once and used it for horses - even boarded other people's horses there. The stalls were large LOL - holding pens for  the cattle, but a few dividers made more stalls. How could it hurt anything?

  6. Of course I would board there if everything else looked good.  There is nothing wrong with and old cow barn being used for horses.  I have been using my barn for years for horses and yes it is an old "cow barn" first it was built for mixed live stock. then it was gutted removing the cow stantions, and box stalls and standing stalls and used as a feed lot for steers, then I took over and use it for my horses now.  It is not fancy, there are no box stalls however I could move a gate and fashion one if I had to.  I love my barn, and so do my horses.  Go for it.

  7. Yes, provided it was safe and provided me with the facilities I needed :-)

I worked at a riding school where the horses stood in a cow byre in between lessons, it had just been converted to be horse-safe.

Wouldn't bother me what it was, so long as it suited my needs :-)

  8. When I was in college, I did board at an old cow barn. It was all I could afford at the time. I tried to make my horse's stall as safe as possible even though it had not been designed for a horse. Your place, having been renovated, sounds like it would be just fine. I made a lot of friends in that old barn and had a grand time with them. It's not just the barn, its the people and horses in it that make it a nice home.

  9. Yep I would.

Actually I do board at a barn that use to be a cow barn but the stalls we're re-done. Theres no indoor but its nice enough.

If the fencing is good, the stalls are goos and its what your looking for I would say go for it.

  10. i used to board at a place exactly what you are describing. whats the name of it? They are very nice barns, the barn is built wide, to accomodate rows of cows, and usually the stalls are 14x18 or something, unsual. I would definitly go for it if the accomodations are nice (arenas, stalls, etc), if its kept clean and tidy in working order, the horses seem well cared for, etc. Look into it some more!

  11. Does it matter what the barn was built for?  I board at my boss's friend, she just has a simple, old barn and a few nice pastures, and years of experience.  It's cheaper than the fancy hoity-toity places in my area, but I don't see how the horse knows the difference.  He's fat and happy and well cared for, and he's close enough that I can see him every day.  As long as you've seen the place and it looks clean and safe, I don't see what's wrong with boarding there.

  12. Hey There,

I have a friend that is extremely wealthy but never built a new barn, just renovated the old cow barn. She still makes changes to it though, like she got the whole floor redone and she got mats put all the way down the hall way, etc. She made it very pretty but never thought about taring it down. She has advanced 3 day event horses and is an advanced rider who is very well known. It just goes to show that looks are not everything. Of course I would consider it, as long as its safe. Good luck.
