Can anyone answer this question? It's part of my summer work for AP biology and I'm severly stuck!

Two people A and B survive a plane crash on a remote island. Person A is standing in water that is freezing. Person B is on the other side of the island, where the ice is melting. Assuming that all other factors are constant and knowing that water freezes and ice melts at the same temperature, which person would suffer from hyporthermia first? Explain...

  1. The person in cold air would lose body heat slower than the person in the water.  In the air, you would lose heat mostly through radiation and convection.  In the water you would lose more body heat through conduction.

Remember in the movie Titanic--not exactly a scientific reference I know but a good illustration of the principle.  Rose was floating on a piece of wreckage and she lived.  Jack was in supercooled water, actually colder than freezing because of the salt in it, and he died quickly.

  2. definetly A he is exposed to freezing ice.

man B he would slowly get hyperthermia but it would take a while
