  1. A lot of similarites between these two guys.  Both were big, hard hitting heavyweights.  They could both also be rather lethargic at times unfortunately, so this could either be a slugfest or a borefest.  I believe that Weaver has a little better stamina than Lyle and would prevail down the stretch and win by decision.

  2. I dont know about Weaver being a big puncher, I certainly never viewed him as such, he usually overwhelmed guys with a barrage of punches when he did score knockouts.  Also Weaver was not hard to hit and did not posses a great chin, It certainly was not one of the weakest ive seen but certainly not strong,

He had a couple wins over some other fringe contenders like Williams and Tate.

Lyle on the other hand was a HUGE puncher with either hand and he had a pretty good chin and good stamina. They were about the same size with Lyle taking him by a couple inches in height i think.

I don't see too many scenarios where Weaver comes out the winner, Lyle was too strong and to tough, if they two engaged in a slug fest as tough guy said the fight would be over in seconds.

Weaver's only chance, and it is a small one would be to counter punch Lyle and stay away, but I cant see him keeping that up the whole fight and eventually would have to punch it out with the aggressive Lyle and whenever that happened the fight would be over.

    Lyle 4th round blow out.

Gyro_10:    You cant just look at two guys records, determine who has been knocked out more or has a higher percentage and make a judgment based on that without actually knowing the fighters and heres why : You dont know the caliber of the opponents each was knocked out by or who the beat, you don't know the circumstances surrounding some of the knockouts. Lyle defiantly had a better chin, percentages dont matter if you watched the two fight you'd know Lyle had the better chin by far. When Ali knocked him out it was not his chin that let him down it was fatigue from Ali wearing him down. His second knockout to George Foreman was because he stood there and traded with Big George who was on of the heaviest hitting heavyweights in history.

By the time he was knocked out again he was a shell of his former self. And was knocked out later by Big punching Gerrie Cooney.

Weaver on the other hand was Ko'ed on an on going basis, if you hit his chin the fight was over basically. So grab all the percentages you want, if the two met in the ring Lyle would dummy Weaver and stop him early in the fight.

It would look nothing like Cotto-Margarito, Cotto was a superior boxer who schooled Margarito until the Mexicans size just wore Cotto down and exhausted him and frustrated him, if you hit a guy with your best shots for 8 rounds and he doe not get hurt that will tear a fighter down mentally which is what happened to Cotto, he caved. Hopefully he can learn and come back from that.

  3. I get a feeling this fight wouldn't actually go 15 rounds, but as with all slugfests, It comes down to one thing. Rocky said it best: "It aint about how hard you can hit, It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward"

Ron Lyle has been knocked out 4 times

Mike Weaver has been knocked out 12 times

Even if you take into consideration Weaver's longer career, if you divide the times Koed by the rounds boxed, the results are as follows.

Percentage of rounds in which fighter was KOed

    Weaver: 396/12 = 3.03%

    Lyle: 324/4 = 1.23%

Sources used for statistics, simple math done by me.

So as you see, Lyle has a seemingly tougher chin, and I think it would look a lot like Cotto-Margarito, but slower paced. 2 sluggers going at it, one with a more solid chin pulls the victory out in a later round.

  4. toughguy2's answer is a good one. I liked Ron Lyle so I would pull for him to win. It probably would turn into a boring fight since they both had a tendency to fight down to the level of the opponent and not to their full capability.
