  1. WOW!  Excellent question.  Like a few of the other gents in here i am stumped why these two never fought.  You made me did into my boxing book of lists/stats.  Both great fighters during that era.  In 52 I would have had to give the edge to Moore in a tough 15 rounder after taking an early pounding.  Moore's durability and movement would have minimized Walcott's power early, not without some damage.  I would buy this on PPV for $100.

  2. This would have been an entertaining fight and it's kind of surprising that they never met in the ring.  Both were clever, both seemed to get better with age, and both had good power and boxing ability.  I believe that Walcott would have been the busier fighter and has the advantage in handspeed too.  Walcott by close but unanimous decision.

  3. Moore was probably one of the craftiest, smartest fighters in the ring. He had a good chin and good speed with sneaky power. James Toney almost looks like a carbon copy of Moore's style.

Jersey Joe was a two handed puncher with excellent footwork for the era he was fighting in. Fast although not as fast as Moore, he too had a decent chin, Walcott's downside was that he kept his hands low a flaw that I believe Moore would expose.

This fight would have came down to who can outwork and outsmart the other fighter. I see this fight going the full 15 rounds with no knockdowns. I think Moore will find a way to steal some close rounds and pull out a close decision.

Although I believe that while Moore will be landing the cleaner more accurate shots and landing at a higher percentage, I think Walcott will be throwing a higher volume of punches which could sway the judges.

I think in the end this fight comes down to what the Judges are looking for. Either way, If Moore wins the Walcott fans will scream rip off, if Walcott wins the Moore fans will say he got ripped.

Either way its a close fight that could go either way.

  4. moore maybe the greatest light heavyweight champ of all time, but at heavyweight he - like bob foster - wasn't that successful.....do i choose walcott by stoppage by the 12th round.

  5. Both great fighters! Man, seeing as how Archie Moore was at going the distance and Walcott never really trained for long fights, it's hard to say. Walcott had the power and Moore had the speed but in a 15th rounder I'll go with Archie Moore. Like Marciano, Archie Moore always kept himself in great shape and could've gone longer than 15 rounds.
