Rugby players of course.. They're just more well rounded. They're trained to be tough, agile and fast. In American football they have certain guys taking hits, certain guys passing and certain guys scoring tries.

If the average NFL player with no pads verses the average rugby player with no headgear I think the NFL player shall win only because NFL has way more tackles and they are more used to playing a tough game.

Very interesting question. I am a fan of both Rugby and the NFL.  It all depends on who would be fighting each other. Take a group of 50 of the best Rugby players against 50 of the best NFL players, I think the Rugby players would win about 60% of the fights.

In my opinion on who is 'tougher', I would have to say a majority of the average Rugby players are tougher than the NFL players (without pads).

I think that NFL players from the 50's thru 70's were much tougher than todays NFL players, especially if it were d**k Butkus or Ray Nitschke. It would have been interesting to see them play Rugby.

Todays NFL players may be stronger and more athletic, but I would like to see how they would hold up in a Rugby match and see how tough they are without the pads.

ARE YOU SERIOUS...?     Many big name NFL Stars have openly admitted that THEY would not play a game of EITHER UK or AUS. style Football because of the CRASH-EFFECT Rate on the human body......that is why those ******* wear so much Protective Gear.....besides UK , AUSSIE or NZ`er...last man standing Rule counts....so with-out "protection"....... US don`t stand for too long......I SUPPOSE that that Principal applies to their vew of War-time situations , as well!

Ruggers are tough guys and big, but NFL players are huge, so if you put a fly half up against a defensive lineman, my money would be on the football player but I'd take a prop against a cornerback any day.
