Who would you rather have on your team: Bill Russell or Wilt Chamberlain?

Wilt Chamberlain had Jerry West and Elgin Baylor. those two are better than most of Bill Russell's teammates. Russell had Bob Cousy and John Havlicek... i'll let you decide.

Russell. He totally defined defense in an age of offense. His battles with Wilt were epic. His 11 rings (the most of any player in history) is proof.

Russell won so many rings because he was the greatest defender in basketball history. As you age, your offense will produce less and less because you are not athletically capable of the same feats. But defense is something you can keep doing forever. The fundamentals of defense are pure finesse, something age can't take away. If we look at Dikembe Mutumbo, the only reason he's still so valuable and gets so much time as a back-up center despite being 41 years old is his defense. He's still cranking out blocks and his finger wag (2nd on the all time blocked shots list right behind another long-careered big man Hakeem Olajuwon). Olajuwon had an even longer career than Jordan even though they were in the same draft.

So Russell definitely. You build your team around his defense because it is constant.

Wilt was a GREAT individual player, put up a ton of numbers, and was certainly the league attraction for years...while Bill had to console himself with being the MOST successful pro athlete EVER on the MOST successful NBA franchise EVER (don't get me started...)...

wilt chamberlain, even when the game wasnt as complex as it is today, the guy was the most dominant athlete in the world during that time. he averaged 40 boards for 1 season, he had like 20+ games where he scored more than 50 points, he was way too good

in they prime. Chamberlain. Russell won more but look at the team he had. a playing hall of fame team! it wasn't just him, had many other starts. put Wilt with that team n he will have just as many rings. if i was building a team and had the number 1 pick and those 2 players where available i would go with Wilt. dude was a beast!
