i.m not entirely certain of this as i don't tend to watch a lot of the southern hemisphere teams play but i'd be tempted to say england or france.

10 ANSWERS

  1. argentina by a distance

  2. front fow.... italy and argentina

second row..... ireland and new zealand

back row..... ireland and new zealand

  3. I can't believe nobody is even mentioning the Boks... Does anybody seriously think their is a better lock combination than Bakkies and Victor? I mean, they ran riot with the All-Black throw in at the end of last years tri-nations and stole about 7 linout balls against the Waratahs this weekend.

Furthermore, Os du Rand, yes, he is still the best tight-head front-rower around.

Check out the South African tight eitht in the Super 14, The Lions, Sharks, Cheetahs (when they actually play their first choice) and obviously Bulls have very good packs.

Jeez, to come back to my first point, I cant' believe nobody acknowledges Victor Matfield and Bakkies Botha's dominance in the line-out. Furthermore I have seen Bakkies save a couple of tries with on the trie-line tackles. I suppose the proof will be in the Rugby World Cup pudding... cant' wait...

  4. It depends...

Argentina are worldwide known for having the best scrum, if having the best scrum means having the best pack of forwards then they have it, although they are kind of weak in the lineouts and they are not famous for their mawls.

  5. Italy have the strongest pack.but south Africa and newzealand take some beating

  6. Its hard to look past NZ. They're big, strong and man they can move! (I can't say that I've seen that many Argentinian games, but they sound promising)

  7. the argentine pack are the best scrumaggers but in terms of getting to the breakdown quickly and getting quick ball to the backsit has to be the kiwis

  8. has to be New zealand.

Italy and Argentina has brilliant scrums.

Ireland and S.africa have impressive lineouts.

Many teams are good in the loose, but as a combination of all 3 new zealnd stand head and shoulders above the rest.

From the wording of the question I can see why many people pick out Italy and Argentina, as these teams have some of the best individual forwards in the world, but when it comes to playing as a pack Italy in particular often don't produce, New Zealand on the other hand regularly play to a level where the sum is greater than the parts

  9. In loose play: The All Blacks. They get around the field so quickly and are not bad in the tight, too!

In the Scrum: Argentina. Not sure why but they seem to have a never-ending supply of great scrummagers in their tight 5.

  10. From their performance on Saturday I'd say England are stronger than france up front but then Ireland totally battered England in the forwards yet fell apart at times in their defeat by France so it really depends on who turns up in the Northern Hemisphere.

Italy are said to have the third best pack of forwards in the world behind Argentina and New Zealand and going by their recent performances, with the exception of the game against the French, I'd say this assertion stands.

The Argentine pack has always been renowned as one of the most fearsome in the world and until recently I'd say they were the best but right now there's no debating that New Zealand have both the most functional lineout, the best scrum and the most mobile, heavy and powerful back row rugby has ever seen. McCaw, So'oailo and Collins are monsters around the park.

    The answer is New Zealand.
