  1. Patrick Martin wrote a poem titled "Roaches" in the early 1990s. It appeared in "The Paris Review."

    "Hail the greasy automatons,

    each circuit of hunger traced on linoleum--

    toward dishwater and marinara and back under the radiator.

    A commute from airless blind walls to a sunfree circumambulation of the sink.

    Nothing is left unsaid-- nothing is said at all;

    To know nothing is to make true ignorance impossible

    because to be unable to acquire makes acquisition meaningless.

    But still, my mind turns back against my will

    to how you can't quite kill them all off neatly because

    my whole mind turns like ten thousand roaches

    hundreds and hundreds of times every day and when I'm finished

    telling you this, as I am telling you this automatic tale,

    nothing will have been wasted because nothing is ever used."
