Francis Scott Key was captured on a British ship, and wrote about the scene he saw. It was meant to be a poem, and the next day, the American flag was waving and finished the poem. It later became the national anthem.

everyone's right about FSK but here's a funny bit for you.  He wrote the words but when it was decided to put it to music they looked around and chose a popular drinking song's tune to set it too.  How awesomely AMERICAN is that?!  Personally, I love it.  And - can you imagine listening to a bar full of drunk men singing a song with those kinds of high notes in it?  So, now you know -
