Whole Foods Flax Seed Oil Pills - do they contain bovine or non-bovine gelatin?

I bought Whole Foods brand Flax Seed Oil pills today and was unable to read the ingredients list while in the store. When I came home, the ingredients list did not specify whether the gelatin used is bovine or non-bovine. I tried to look it up on their website but could not find any info.

  1. I tried searching for the Whole Foods brand, and couldn't find anything. Their brand is also called '365', right? I couldn't find anything under that name either.

    Although I'm not answering your question directly, I thought I might give an alternative suggestion, considering I've tried tons of different stuff. What works quite well, and is more palatable that swallowing giant gelatin capsules (yuk), is to get the oil in a bottle and add it to your food. A great brand is 'Udo's Oil', which is carried in Whole Foods, or something similar. Udo's (and others like it) is a blend of different oils, including evening primrose oil, which helps with hormonal stuff and PMS (including cramps, etc.)

    When you get the oil, make sure it comes from a refrigerator or cooler of some kind, and is in a dark colored bottle. Once you get it home, keep it in the fridge as well. All you have to do is add however much you want to to what you're eating. Obviously oil doesn't go great with every type of food, but there are many things it tastes great on... salads, stir-fries, steamed veggies, pasta... just make sure you put it on after the food is cooked, and don't actually cook with the oil... the high heat destroys the important components of the fatty acids.


  2. Can't answer about that brand, but you might want to know that the Granovita ones are vegan. It doesn't say on the packet but I know the company owners, the whole company product line is vegan, and therefore veggie as well.

  3. Usually the type of gelatin is listed.  If it is not clear take the product back, unopened and get your money back.  Then buy a clearly marked brand.  Flax seeds can be ground for immediate use in a coffee grinder.  It is good on salad, in soup or anyway that you can think of where you don't need to heat it much.  Or, try the liquid type and keep it refrigerated.
