I have to type a socials essay and this is my topic. I need to find out any info and also why this event is so important to Canadians?

  1. The CPR's importance to Canada is that it was the first transcontinental railroad in Canada, and it united the western provinces, and made commerce possible economically,  with the rest of the country.

  2. The Canadian Pacific Railway, for its trials and tribulations; when the final splke was hammered in; that was the birth of Canada as we know it.

    The CP was chartered to build to the Pacific to unite British Columbia with what was known at the time as "Upper Canada" and "Lower Canada", or Ontario and Quebec.  Even back then the eastern provinces were not considered.

    I can't remember the name of the book, but Pierre Berton wrote what I just summarized above.  It traces the struggle of building the railroad; the colourful characters, the Wheeling and dealing to get it done.
