  1. You should talk to their baggage office at the airport when your luggage does not show up. They will take a report at that time, and will provide you with information, including phone numbers, as to who to contact.  They also know where to send the luggage if it is just delayed or is found.

If you have already left the airport, your best bet is to return to the airport and file a report at that desk. That is the best thing to do.

Otherwise, if you absolutely cannot get back to the airport.  you should call the airline's customer service line (on their web site).

You should report to the last airline you flew on, and/or to the airline that ticketed you, if this was a joint trip.  You must have the receipt they gave you for your luggage - it has a code that lets them identify your baggage and find out where it was lost in the process.  They scan this tag as the luggage moves through the system.

American Airlines contact information for this:

    Delayed Baggage

    Phone:

Baggage delayed less than 5 days

    1-800-535-5225

    24 hours

    7 days a week

Baggage delayed longer than 5 days

    see www.aa.com/bagstatus for further information.

Here is taca's online baggage tracer. They appear to be harder to contact on this issue.

  2. I think you go to the website and click lost luggage.

American Airlines are rubbish! they lost my luggage too.

  3. First of all, did you file a lost baggage claim. You also need to take inventory of what was in your bag and the estimated value of all those things. After your claim has been filed and should there be no resolution, baggage services should issue you monetary compensation.

If you are not satisfied with this, you should write a letter to both airlines. You will address it to their consumer relations department. You can look on line or call for the address. I would write and not email them because a written letter carries greater weight than the thousands of emails they get each week. Also make a copy of the letter to keep, just in case you dont hear back from them. They may also have a number to call. I know American had a number in Dallas a few years back but I am not so sure if they still have it.

In your letter, please be a concise as you can: state the problem, how it has inconvenienced you during your travels, and what should be done about it. Make sure you include your emotional content but do not make it a letter about your emotions. Let them know what a disservice it has been (you had no clothes on your trip, you lost sentimental items that cant be replaced, or whatever is applicable). I hope this helps.

    Good Luck

  4. It depends on where the luggage was lost and who was the ticket booker.  I will assume you filed a claim at the airport (at least I hope you did).  When you did, you should have received info on tracking the luggage.

If you did not file a claim at the airport, you may be out of luck.

From the AA website:  "If you are unable to locate a checked bag upon arrival, you should notify an American Airlines/American Eagle baggage service agent prior to leaving the airport. At that time, you will be given a File Locator ID and a brochure explaining the baggage recovery process. Please refer to your six-letter file locator in all conversation and correspondence regarding your delayed baggage."

If you did not file one at the airport you will need to go back and do so, most likely.

  5. Assuming that you flew both on a series of connecting flights, the last carrier you flew is the one responsible for tracking down and delivering your luggage.  Contact that carrier and give them your information.

If you want to complain about the carrier in general you can contact the US Department of Transportation about American.  TACA is not a US-flagged carrier, so the DOT would not handle their complaints and you would file through the government of El Salvador.

If you are having trouble getting anywhere, get your travel agent involved.  S/he may have contacts that can speed up the process.

    Good luck!
