Question:

Whom do you consider the greatest grass court player?

I am inclined to think it's Pete Sampras. Roger is good on Grass. Looks probably great but because of his overall game. Pete won Wimbledon titles all through his career, even when he was kinda' old, which seems to say that he was just supreme in those conditions with his serve popping up and painting the lines. If he comes back and play at Wimbledon now, I think, he will still reach the semis easily. The serve is still just too good (saw it at the exhibition matches with Roger). Bravo Pete! What's your pick?

  1. I also think it was Pete Sampras. No one would surpass him in that surface. He did have problems in Roland Garros just like Federer, but in Grass, it's Pete!

  2. It's a toss up between Pete and Roger, but I have to say Roger.

  3. I agree. Not only did Pete win the most, but if it weren't for Roger, he could have won all 7 in a row. Also, Pete played the textbook Grass style: serve-and-volley. No other current player does that and Pete was most successful at it in the past, so I think we can safely say Sampras is the greatest grass player.

  4. Pete Sampras

    Roger Federer

    Bjorn Borg

i think those three are the best grass players of all time

  5. It's a toss up between Pete and Roger but J'Adore is right... we will have to wait until Roger officially retires before we can make this distinction. Another factor that needs to be taken into consideration is the fact that the fast paced grass courts are no longer the surface that it was all those years ago. It's now much slower therefore I don't believe there exists such a thing as the perfect grass court game. The courts are much slower now and because of this, the classic serve and volley game that has become the typical style of play on a grass court no longer exists. Guys like Pete Sampras, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg, Bjorn Borg would stand no chance today of winning as many Wimbledon titles as they did.

For the women, again it's a toss up between Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf. I would give the edge to Martina because she was truly the most dominant player on grass of her generation, until a much younger Steffi Graf came along. Venus is the best grass court player of her generation today.

  6. Pete Sampras is the greatest grass court player.

Roger Federer is the second greatest grass court player.

    Borg third.

  7. Probably Goran Ivanisavic.  He was hella-good!

  8. Sampras is the best grass court player ever

    Federer is # 2

Borg I will say is tied at 2 with Federer

    Becker will be 4 ( 7 finals, 3 wins , 4 runner ups )

Mcenroe and Edberg will come next

  9. Roger Federer

  10. Maybe we could answer this question when Roger's career is actually over. After people retire all the good things get remembered thru somewhat rose tinted glasses. I don't really think now is the time to ask who is better outta Pete and Roger. I never saw Sampras play so I will never be able to say, but the likes of McEnroe and alot of players on tour who have played both (Ie. Roddick) think Fed is the greatest ever. So maybe they have the best idea.

  11. Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Bjorn Borg in that order.

McEnroe, Ivanisevic, Becker and Edberg would be in my next tier. I loved watching Edberg on grass. He had the perfect game for it.
