My money is on Alejandro Valverde, I think it will be a while before Aus. has an overall winner, Cadel Evans might be good for a place, but I don't think he can ever win it !

The bookies consider it a two-horse race between Cadel Evans and Alejandro Valverde. Valverde looked strong on Stage 1 and has a better team behind him but Evans came so close last year and is a better time-trialler. The removal of time bonuses for stage victories aids Evans but the reduction in time-trials helps Valverde.

It should be a close contest but I give Evans the edge on one factor. The time he lost last year was when a destructive climber upped the tempo. There's no Rasmussen, no Contador and Soler isn't in best health so a steadier climbling pace should suit the Australian.

This could be Cadel Evans best shot as the tour winner. So aussies may get to rejoice in the first aussie victory. Main competition will be Valverde and Cunego.
