I was surfing a bit while my daughter was napping and saw this story:

Nicole Russell, who lived in Johannesburg, South Africa, was about to leave for work one morning when a car pulled up and 4 armed men jumped out and demanded her keys and purse. She held both arms out so that they could take her jewelry and keys, but in her confusion she didn't realize that she had handed them her house keys. The men became agitated and violent when the keys would not unlock the car. Russell began to scream when one of the men grabbed her and began dragging her towards the car. Russell's mother, alerted by the screams, pushed a panic button in the house and ran into the garden where she was confronted by an attacker with a knife. Bella, the family's 4 year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier, was with the mother and she lunged at the man with the knife. She bit him several times on the leg and was shot in the head. In spite of her injury Bella continued to defend her family, until the men panicked and fled. There was a point when a man, having just shot at Bella, turned his gun on Nichol and pulled the trigger. There was an empty click: either the gun had misfired or Bella had taken the bullet intended for Russell. When the men were gone Bella sat down and rolled. As Nicole held the dog in her arms Bella looked at her quietly for a few minutes, then died. An autopsy showed that Bella's heart had been completely drained of blood in her fierce battle to protect her family.

It reminded me of my childhood dog Brandy, who saved us from many things, though nothing so heroic as Bella. He saved us from Snakes, and things like that though and he was my Hero, all my dogs ever since have had to measure up to his memory.

What animal in YOUR life has been your hero... please share.

  1. Well...that's really cool but..my hero is my dog lucky, a greyhound. I've had him since l was 5 years old. He was my brother and best friend. He got me though a lot back then when my parents were fighting and the divorce. He was something wonderful to come home to and see him. He just had this thing about him that could make you happy no matter what. Sadly he passed away this last march at the age of 16 yrs old. I miss him so much! But i couldn't be anymore grateful to have him in my life.

  2. My cousin's pit bull was killed by an alligator as he was trying to get the kids out of the river where they had been swimming. They said he was barking like crazy, ran out of the water, ran back into the water barking like mad at them, then ran out of the water again. They followed him out to see what was wrong with him and saw that he was covered in puncture wounds. They rushed him to the vet. They kept him there, but, he died the next day.

  4. my two personal stories of my animal heros:

My bernese mountain dog (who died from the pet food recall 2 years ago) saved my life twice. The first time from a drunk man who tried to rape me and the second time from a rabid fox. My berner was the best dog I have ever had.

My second hero is my korean jindo. when my mom had open brain surgery and came home, he stayed by her side and protected her, refusing to eat or go out potty (he held/controlled of course). He just lay by her side until she was strong enough to sit up. it just touched me how he sacrificed his own needs just to look after her and protect her from harm.

here are two stories that touched me deeply:

In Korea,  Jindo dogs are quite the news makers.  In 1995, Jindo dog named "Baekgu (white dog)" made a headline.  Baekgu was sold to a person by his master because his master was going through economical difficulty at the time.  -Young purebred Jindo dogs can be sold for good money in Korea because of its hunting skills, and protective nature.-  The person who bought Baekgu was living in a city which is about 160 miles away from Baekgu's home.  Jindo's master's daughter later said that she wept over letting Baekgu go, because he was her best friend.  A few days after Baekgu left his previous family, the previous owner was notified that Baekgu was missing, and that he probably ran away.  As time went by, the previous owner and his family felt deep sorrow for Baekgu, assuming that he is lost forever.  After about three months, however, the daughter spotted Baekgu,  in front of the front door, barely standing with three feet.  She later said that she ran to him and hugged him, crying out loud his name.  He was extremely skinny, and half of his body was pretty much damaged and some flesh was exposed.  He couldn't use one of his leg. The story of Baekgu returning home from 160 miles far made a news weeks later.  The family decided to keep him, of course, and because of his publicity the family could get help from others to keep Baekgu as their special family member.

Another story I saw on TV tells how loyal  Jindo is to his or her master.  I can't remember the gender or the name of this particular Jindo dog.  The master of this particular Jindo went on mountain climbing during the winter with his Jindo.  Unfortunately, he had an accident and died in the mountain.  His dead body was found later by searchers, and they also found his Jindo dog right besides him.  Later on, it was revealed that he was dead for approximately for five days.  It is amazing that his Jindo was guarding his owner's dead body without eating for five days.

    animals are amaziing!<3

  5. Oh my that made me cry. Wow...

Max is my Animal Hero. Its nothing as dramatic as that, mind you, but he *did* save my life on a walk.

Before I moved, we lived in a pretty woodsy part of the city, and he was still a puppy in house training so he needed frequent walks. Well, at about 2:30 am in the dead of winter, I was out walking him along the streets where the street lights don't come on. We were about half-way into our walk when I started to hear something smushing the snow about twenty feet away from me, I turned and started to walk home and then out of no where some man tackles me to the ground and pins my arms above my head. I started screaming and trying to kick the guy but in the snow I couldn't get a foot hold to push myself up. Max took cue and lunged at the guy, and in the process, knocked him off of me. He apparently caught him on the face because the guy quit trying to beat Max off of him, and here was blood on the snow. I called Max and walked off to a neighbors house, woke them up, and called the police, luckily (again!) there was on off-duty cop that lived six blocks up, and came out to check on everything.

The guy was arrested, and they found two knives (pocket and a small saw knife) and a condom.

    I never felt luckier.

  6. This didn't happen with me but with a famil friend. The woman came home and noticed water on the stairs (it was coming from upstairs). She got worried and thought something might have happened to her husband so she rushed upstairs, dog at her side, and called out her husband's name but there was no answer. She noticed that the water heater in the bathroom had burst which caused a small flood on her second floor. She was heading toward the computer room to check if her husband was there and the dog ran past her into the room first. As soon as the dog stepped into the computer room he was electrified. The woman was shocked and grabbed her dog and rushed him to the vet but he died on the way. She called us and she was crying uncontrollably. This dog was like her baby. He was a lab/australian shephard mix. I felt terrible when I heard the news but the dog saved her life. If she had taken the first step in that room she would have died that night. Her husband was still at work, he wasn't even home yet. Her dog died a hero.

  7. Wow what a story, I have never had anything like that happen to me, but it's amazing of how some of these animals can do the unexpected.

  8. Every ones story's are so sad! My dog never saved me but I know some heroic story's of dogs that are true:

Hachiko the famous Akita of Japan. The Akita was brought to Japan with his owner Professor Ueno. They had a very strong bond together. Everyday

professor Ueno would get on the train and come back in the afternoon. Hachiko would always sit right at the train station and wait until his master came back. One day in 1995 or 1996 while Pro. Ueno was at work he suffered a stroke and died. As usual Hachiko waited for Pro. Ueno to come back. Hachiko waited 10 yrs at the train station until his own death at the train station. People did take care of Hachiko but he would not go away to another house. Now there is a statue of him at the train station in Japan.

  9. great!

i enjoyed and shared the pleasure .

  10. I honestly cannot remember the details of the story because I read about it years and years ago but it was a golden retriever who somehow saved a quadriplegic from a burning house, jumped thru a window I believe or got out of the house in some other way and alerted the neighbors to save the quadriplegic from the burning house.  If the dog had not alerted the neighbors to the fire, which happened about 3:00 a.m., its owner would have died in that fire.
