i dont think this is very interesting,, thought it resets the points, now they give bonus pts, they should if they want to keep the chase , start everyone who qualifies back to zero,, for all 12,, becuase like in kyle buschs case he could finish 10th in the first 3 races and still come out with the points lead, even if the same person won all 3 of the first 3 chase races,,,

old point system worked fine,, didnt need any changing,, simple, race everyweek, team with most points wins championship,,,,

  1. I liked the old system best myself.  But I see the good points in this system.

One bad thing is that Kyle is way in the lead and the last 10 races well it changes everything...like all that hard work that got him there now means nothing.

So then you get to the chase and it's the kind of show that keeps you on the edge iof your seat.  It's a level playing field and anything can happen and usually does.

I am so looking forward to it.

  2. i've tried a few times now and i don't quite follow your logic. i like the way it's set up now - the only thing i would change - more bonus points for each win - and i'm sure jeff gordon and kyle busch would agree. there are reasons why there were changes made - primarily to award those who went for wins during the race to the chase, rather than just points racing all year. and whoever gets the most wins should have an advantage when the chase starts.

by your logic, it would be near impossible that someone else wins the first three races and didn't gain the points lead. if one driver finished first in the first three races, and kyle finished second in all three, they're going to be awfully close - depending upon who led the most laps and how many wins kyle has compared to that driver as the chase begins.

i think it could use more tweaking here and there, but a return to 2003 when kenseth ran it away with at all before the year was done just made the last few races almost pointless. that's especially true for sponsors who knew that attendance and viewership drop once the champion is decided, especially if junior's not in contention anymore. ever been to a race junior has dropped out of for whatever reason? people start leaving in droves (sadly)...

how exciting has the nationwide series been the past couple of years with harvick and edwards clinching it before the end of the season? not very, if you like watching a true "race to the finish" - at a particular track or for the whole season.

    that's my $0.18.

  3. I think that they should give the top twelve some points by where they are when the chase begins. Not just for winning races.

  4. I would prefer they copy the F1 system. Simple, smart and if forces teams and drivers to be at the top of their game all season long.  Check out their points standing as of today. Go ahead, go look, tell me that isn't a guttrencher of a run for the championship....

  5. buddy i hate the chase it's stupid i agree with you all the way man the old system was 1,000 times better! Nascar is getting boring up to 2004 it was exciting to watch until they started the stupid chase!!

  6. Not this season. I can't wait until the chase!

  7. I like it the way it is. It makes for exciting races at the end of the year. Start'em fresh but still give the bonus points for wins.

  8. I seriously have trouble even considering anyone who wins the Championship by the chase format as not really the winner, unless they were the points leader when the chase started. I think the chase concept should have been laughed off when brought up because it makes the last 10 races the only ones that are really important. We would also be calling Jeff Gordon a 6 time NASCAR champion instead of 4.

I feel that the winner of the championship should had to have done it over 36 races, and not use 26 races just to get ready for 10.

If any driver is able to get a 300 point lead, I don't care who it is, but I think they would deserve it. Put yourself in the drivers shoes...would you like it if you worked hard 26 races to get a good lead in points, and then with a couple of races to go in the season you have a wreck, and lose any hope of winning the points. Then you lose millions of dollars in the points payout over having a couple of bad races in the chase.

Plus, it's hard to compare winners from the chase format to the champions that won it before the chase, because Jeff Gordon would have been a 6 time champion had it not been for the chase. Instead we look at him as a 4 time champion.

  9. they just figured every other sport had a playoff system and besides its not so entertaining if the points leader has a 400 point advantage with 5 races to go, its not going to draw viewers in the way they want too

  10. I agree with you.

  11. Nah....I like the Chase format.

Resetting the points to zero sounds pretty dang unfair. The guy who slips into 12th to make the chase with no wins start's the Chase with the same zero points as the guy who went in 300 points ahead of 2nd and has 7 wins! Not fair at all!

  12. You just don't like the current system because Kyle Busch is kicking butts and taking names.  I bet if your driver was leading....your attitude would be completely different.

    I like the chase.

I think that the points should not re-set to 0.  If 1 and 12 were the same....whats the reason for them to race  hard before the chase. They have no incentive not to just do the bare minimum to get into the top 12.

  13. Agreeing.

I never thought it was broke, why fix it?

  14. I hate the chase format, it only rewards the driver that is the best for the final 10 races, not the driver who was most consistant through out the year.

IMO, Kurt Busch should not be a cup champ.  Jeff Gordon should have #5, Jimmie should be at least a 3 time cup champ, Kyle (as much as I hate to admit it) should be the run-away champ this year, becuase he's on fire.  I'm sure Kyle will hate the chase as much as he hates the COT if he's not crowned the champ this year.  I'm defending drivers that I really dont care for all that much, except for Gordon, I've grown to like him more the older he gets.

Folks keep going back to when Matt won the cup, the fact is, Matt was the best driver ALL year long, reguardless of how many wins.  Matt had 1 win, 11 top fives and 25 top 10's, 2nd place Jimmie  3 wins,  14 top 5's and  20 top 10's.  Jimmie lost the cup by 90 pts, with a couple more top 10's or do away with some DNF's, Jimmie would have been crowned the champ, but the fact is, he wasnt the most consistant driver all year.

  15. Amen, there was nothing wrong with it, it wasn't broke and Nascar tried to fix it and made a mess, all this chase is $$$$, more media hype, it gives the media idiots something to sound like they are excited about, and its also for the big $$$$ Sponsors as well, but then we all there is no such thing as Nascar any more its Na$car.. Bring back the good ole days.

    Go Dale Jr & Hms

  16. well, times a changing and i guess the old points system was ok but when Nascar decided that points runaways was not in their best interest, they changed it to 12, remember it was 10 now 12...trying to get more interest and money into the mix..but i really do agree with you, old system was fine!
