Don't even joke.  FZ was a way better guitar player.  But I still would rather listen to Led Zep over Zappa.  Just a preference.

while frank zappa had his hilarious lyrics, u just cant beat some of jimmy page's guitar licks. the guy played with a violin bow for gods sake

As a fan of both I have to pick Zappa. Most people don't even listen to the guitar work on his albums. It's pretty incredible stuff. As far as playing with a bow, not even a little hard t do.

OK...Frank Zappa was not really a virtuoso guitar player, he was a composer. The guitar solos you hear on most of his albums are live takes that he manipulated in the studio the old fashioned way...with a razor bale and three inch analog tape!  He was a master of editing so really his in moment solos never really existed other than just that...in the moment. The tonality of his playing was unlike anything anyone was doing or really has done since. His rhythmic choices were so off the charts it is near impossible to hear any kind of patterns at all.  He was simply the greatest American composer of contemporary music in the latter part of the 20th century in not only the rock genre but also in 12 tone classical music too.

   There has been no one like him in music ever and there probably never will.

    When talking about Frank Zappa it is one of the few times a person can use the word 'genius' and not feel like they are over stating their point!
