It is believed to be the ash of bails.

Story goes like this, In 1881-82 season, England was beaten by Australia at the Oval for the first time on English soil. 'The Sporting Times' (English newspaper) carried a obituary which stated that 'English cricket has died and cremated and the ashes is taken to Australia'. And the next tour was said to be 'the quest to regain the ashes'.

During which, some Australian aborigine women presented the English captain Ivo Bligh with a terracotta urn with the ashes believed to be that of either the bails or the stump.

Some sources say that the Ashes are in fact those of King Cole, the Aussie aborigine cricketer who toured England in 1868. The Dowager Countess of Darnley, claimed recently that her mother-in-law (and Bligh's wife), Florence Morphy (who was one among the Victorian women who gifted Bligh with t he urn) , said that they were the remains of her (Morphy's) veil.

But in 2006 MCC said it is 95% certain that the urn contains the ashes of bails.

The orginal Ashes urn was never presented as a trophy. And Ivo Bligh considered it as a personal gift. It is only that, at a later time, the series was played for  'The Ashes'.

Most people believe it is the bails from the first england/australia match, however Merv Hughes is recorded as saying that on tour in England after winning the Ashes he burnt his underpants and put these ashes in the urn.

I do not believe it though, I think big Merv's undies would have been way too wet to set on fire... :)
