  1. What about making a book? He could draw all the pictures, and write some of the basic words. He could tell you the rest of the words, and you could write them for each page. The books end up being very cute, and something to keep forever. You can even have them printed professionally on-line for less than $20 if you wanted to give them as gifts to grandparents.

Another idea - GeoCaching - www.geocaching.com - It's real, live treasure hunting... all you need is a GPS.

Another idea - Anything outside. Bug collecting, scavenger hunts, etc.

  2. Read, play card games or simple games he can learn the rules to quickly.

Cook with him  - pancakes, cakes, muffins, meals, etc.  Even milkshakes can be fun when made together.  When you are measuring ingredients & reading recipes this is real life maths and literacy in action!

Go on an outing to the local swimming pool or theatre.  Go shopping with him.  Go kick the footy down the park.  Have friends over and have a scavenger hunt or game in the backyard.

Do some painting - kids paints are cheap!  Make playdough - there are heaps of easy recipes online for playdough.

Or you could do some craft work.  Maybe put together a photograph album for him with him.

The ideas are endless.  Enjoy the holidays!

  3. how about practicing writing the alphabet?

spelling, learning new words with flash cards

    learn to ride a bike

play with clay for motor skills

make snacks like cookies, ants on a log...

  4. I have a 5yr old that is always complaining that she is bored... you know what I do?  I kick her butt outside and tell her to go and play.  After 15 mins of sulking, she is amusing herself... making up games, playing with rocks, bugs and sticks.  You can't always be entertaining your children, let them learn how to play and use their imagination on their own.  You will be surprised on what they come up with!

  5. Go to the park, sometimes the simple activities are the most enjoyed.

Teach your child to ride his bike, somthing we all should learn at one point.

Make a den, in or outside with him and then you can read a book inside or play schools (a good way of teaching him to read without it seeming like work).

Have a picnic in or outside, he can help pack the food and pick what he likes to eat, while learning about what is healthy and spending time with you.

Teach him to bake simple stuff like fairy cakes or make smoothies with him.

Go to the beach, if you live near one.

Do races in the garden, a good way of working of the calories kids build up when they are cooped up inide.

Club together with one or two other parents whose children get on well with yours. In this way you can share some of the planning and entertainment responsibilities and also get some time off for yourself.

Libraries, museums, aquariums and churches often have special programmes during the holiday seasons. The activities presented often include storytelling sessions, puppet shows, guided walks in nature parks, art classes, bookmaking, paper folding, face painting and supervised games.

Phone art centres, art galleries or local schools to find out if there are any special courses during the holiday. These are usually entertaining, presented by professionals and teach children useful skills while keeping them occupied.

Find out if there are summer camps for children in your area. This is useful especially if you are working and are unable to spend time with your children or take them on holiday.

Television, videos and computer games have their place, and function well as electronic babysitters, but these do not encourage much creativity or imagination and therefore have their limitations. Children should not spend more than two or three hours per day maximum staring at a screen.

Children are seldom bored if they have a friend with them. The presence of a friend turns even a mundane happening into an adventure.

Board and card games travel well and can keep children occupied for hours. From Pictionary, to Monopoly to Trivial Pursuit - the list is endless.

Get children reading. Take them to a kilo book shop (give them a fixed amount to spend and let them choose their own books as they are much more likely to read them) or the library. Encourage them to get involved in a series of books, such as the Harry Potter books or Tolkien's hobbit epics.

Involve children in some ongoing project, such as redecorating their room, or making something to sell on a craft market.

Go to a farm or Zoo, kids love seeing and learning about the animals there.

Get children involved in some ecological project, like cleaning penguins, doing a beach cleanup, helping to remove alien vegetation, helping out at a bird sanctuary. Feeling useful and needed is a great antidote to boredom.

Children might enjoy going on organised hikes or adventure camps of some sort. It is also a way of meeting new people.

Hope you have a good holiday, and that you get some good ideas.

  6. I suggest to teach him some part of the day yourself like ask him what he's been learning and teach him that.

  7. Let him read books like Harry Potter! And them tell him to go and play with some of his friends and if he don't starve him!Simple as that.Worked for my 5 yr old son.

  8. find a holiday camp in your area that takes 5yr old's

  9. why don't you let your child find things that has or is changing because the earth is getting warm (spring time )you could take nature walks, and the library is always a great, read together, let the child make his first book report, with your help

  10. there are so many things you can do w/your five year old. Museums are one-there are children's museums, art, you name it. He is not to young. There is the zoo-not only will he have fun but you can turn it into a learning experience as well. The park-kids love the park. If the weather is nice-pack a picnic lunch and go to the lake if you have one close by.Cherish the time you have w/him it won't be long until one day he is a teenager and well he will be to busy then to hang out.  look up on the internet for places to take your son in your town. Have fun with him that is all that matters

  11. they like to play outside but if you cant play outside with they get the magic marker that way they cant *** your house up

  12. I hate parents who talk like you.  HE'S FIVE........let him play and socialize with other 5-year-olds.  Take him to a park, spend some time with him, he's only five once.  Do you think your company would shut down if you took a few days off now and again to be with your son?  Probably not.  And guess what 'father of the year" ?  What do you think Jr. will remember when he gets older, you spending time with him, or you pawning him off to keep him busy.  He is going to resent you if you treat him like a little employee instead of like a little kid.

I know economics dictate our daily lives and work routines, if you can take some time, take it.   Teach him how to play baseball, or do something physical.  it's your duty, that's only an example of what you can do.

  13. let him help you, teach him life skills
