The points allow the community to recognize how active and helpful you've been, and they give you another excuse to brag to your friends.

Plus, the more points you get, the higher the level, the more questions you are allowed to answer.  

Plus you can earn the "Top Contributor" badge by showing you are knowledgeable in a particular category.

And, if you send in an abuse report, the more points you have, the more influence you have on Yahoo! taking action on your abuse report.

I get to answer silly questions like this and then ask questions about things that I really care about it return.  It's a win-win situation.
