  10. Vesuvius erupted casting a thick, stifling to the death dust cover over the ancient town. A little know fact is : the citizens could see the volcano beginning to react caused them to remain behind, ASSUMING the "gods" were giving them signs toward some miraculous display of auspicious sort. Their ignorance of fact, much as it is now, STILL, only aided in having surprised them by the great waves of after-dust and be smothered everywhere they happened to be.

Ignorance can be so blissful it can kill you!

I was in Pompeii and I could hardly believe these were people encased in ash...they so much looked like statues!

So much for "gods" too, as well as devils, by the way...the details is in them, alright!!!

  15. Pompeii is a ruined and partially buried Roman city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the comune of Pompei.

It, along with Herculaneum (its sister city), was destroyed, and completely buried, during a catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning two days on 24 August 79 AD.

The volcano collapsed higher roof-lines and buried Pompeii under many meters of ash and pumice, and it was lost for nearly 1700 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1748. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Italy and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Also, worth noting are an amphitheatre, a Palaestra with a central natatorium or swimming pool, and an aqueduct that provided water for more than 25 street fountains, at least four public baths, and a large number of private houses (domus) and businesses. The amphitheatre has been cited by modern scholars as a model of sophisticated design particularly in the area of crowd control.

Today, it is the most popular tourist attraction in Italy!

Vesuvius (a volcanoe) that when it erupted, it covered and burnt Pompeii w/ lava and ash. Pompeii was a tiny town so there for, u couldn't see it cause of the blanket of ash. Now, 200 yrs later, some diggers hit something hard. They kept on digging and digging and digging, and soon, Pompeii was revealed again. They found that people and been turned to pale yellow, brown, and black statues! They also found 18 loaves of bread in a bakery oven that had turned to rock-hard STONE!
