  1. a 35.0 earthquake is not possible - The scale (richter) is a scale from 1-10. A 2.0 earthquake is 10 times stronger than a 1.0 earthquake. The strongest earthquake ever recorded was a 9.6 on the richter scale on May 22, 1960 in Chile. To say that theres a 35.0 earthquake would make it 1 x 10^25 stronger, or 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stronger (my math may be a bit off - but its close to that) than the Chilean earthquake of 1960. It's not possible.

  4. It is a logarithmic scale that goes from minus infinity to plus infinity.  The people that say that it goes from 1 to 10 are wrong.  That being said, there cannot be an earthquake of magnitude 35.  That would correspond to the breakup of our galaxy or something like that.
