I have an indian Passport and I have a F1 US visa and am about to start my education this fall (flying in next 15 days). My passport’s lamination (photo page) is starting to come off from the edges (on one side the passport number’s first 3 letters are exposed). People are saying that this is also considered as a “damaged passport”. I am going to go to the RPO for verifying that but if they say that this is damaged and i need to get a new one issued, i would have to give it to them … what i wanted to know was that what happens to the VISA(s) … will they keep my old passport, will i have to get a new US VISA (even if they give back the old passport).. or would i have to go to the consulate atleast to get it verified.. or would "slight peeling of lamination" be ignored as "not-damaged"?

Also how much time would such a replacement take, can it be done in 15 days.

  1. Passports must be in good condition. Airlines may not accept passengers for international travel and may deny boarding if a passport is damaged beyond normal wear and tear and/or there is evidence of intentional or material alterations or mutilations. Examples of conditions of passports that may result in denied boarding include passports with significant tears, holes, or stains, as well as any changes, obliterations, or alterations, or any other damage which affect the integrity of the passport and/or the identification of the holder, such as the name, date of birth, citizenship and document number. For example, a passport with faded data, missing or severely torn, cut, or chewed pages or cover, missing picture, picture which can be removed from under the laminate or one which requires tape or staples to hold it together, or which has been substantially damaged by liquids, chemicals, or fire, may result in denied boarding. To ensure your travel plans are not interrupted, please make sure your passport is in good condition before you leave.Your Visa will still be valid in your old passport.Just travel with the new and old together

  2. You will get additional booklet.

  3. It Surely is a case of DAMAGED passport... It is a very important document; so government doesn't take any sort of damage to it lightly...

But.. it can me 'mended'... if u know anyone who is working in the passport office, he/she can Re-laminate it from the office.... But don't get it done from a lamination shop... it won't count.

But since u ALREADY have got the visa, i don't think they will not allow you to fly... BUT... better safe than sorry... If it can't be mended.. Apply for a new one... and Yes.... U can get it in 6-7 days... U will just have to submit a letter telling them why u need a passport so urgently... AND i don't think u need to get a new VISA.. but i m not sure.... u can ask the authorities about the same when u get a new passport... NEW visa will take around 4 days... So.. u have 15 more days...

I think its time to get Packing.... GOOD LUCK  :->

  4. If the passport authorities issue a new passport

the old passport will be returned to you duly cancelled under their seal and signature. The new passport will bear a notation that it has been issued in lieu of the old passport whose number will be mentioned. The visa in the old passport will still be valid for travel purposes.

You will have to staple the old passport to the new passport. Then you are all set to commence your journey.Good Luck.
