  1. Well, she's wrong - you can't get a "nonowners" policy to cover you while you drive a car of a household resident.

And if you're under 18, no one is going to give one to you.

She needs to add you to her policy.

A named nonowner policy, is an auto policy for someone that doesn't own a car.  It only covers you for an occasional use vehicle, like a RENTAL car.  It does NOT cover you while you're driving any car regularly furnished for your use, or driving a car belonging to a household member (same thing).

It's good, for example, if you have a company car for your regular use, and the insurance is on your company's policy for the car, but you need coverage when you go on vacation and need a rental.

  2. A nonowners policy is insurance for you without a car.  HOWEVER, it will NOT cover you to drive a vehicle available for your regular use or any vehicle owned by someone in your household.  Therefore, it will NOT cover you to drive your mothers vehicle.  It is also can be just as expensive as insuring a car so you wouldn't be saving any money & it would be worthless for you since it would NOT provide coverage if you need it.

You need to be added to your mother's policy as an occasional driver.

  3. It's basically what it sounds like.  It's auto liability insurance for someone who doesn't own a vehicle.

If you live with your mother, however, and use her car on a regular basis then her insurance company would want her to add you as an authorized user.  That would cover you in her car, but not necessarily in someone else's.

  4. To qualify for a non-owners policy you must:

    1-Not own a vehicle

2-Not live in a household with anyone who owns a vehicle

If you live with your Mom & she's trying to NOT add you to her policy, she is doing something illegal.

If you live elsewhere & will just borrow her vehicle occasionally - it is perfectly legal
