Wht is d meanin of the word "SWEAR"?

I'm newly learnin english. 4 months ago i red in a news paper that "Swear words" means four letter words.

Bt the day before yesterday my friend told me that "I swear you"...

He ment "I promiss You"

NOw i wanna noe the exact meaning of "SWEAR"....
